Lisa Wilkinson’s issue with new Today host

Former Today host Lisa Wilkinson has slammed the way the media is covering the morning show’s all-female hosting line-up.

This week, Channel Nine announced that Deborah Knight would join Georgie Gardner as co-host of the popular morning show.

Knight and Gardner will make their co-hosting debut together next Monday morning.

Wilkinson used an Instagram post to congratulate Knight on her new role but was less than impressed with the media coverage.

“Warmest congratulations to the fab new team just announced,” Wilkinson wrote.

“I sincerely wish them all the very best in the breakfast wars ahead.

“But as my media studies student daughter noted to me, why oh why oh why, in the reporting of the new team do the ages of the women need to be pointed out while the men’s don’t? Similarly, Deb (Knight) being a mum of three is considered significant, but Tony (Jones) being a dad isn’t?

“I don’t understand. We obviously have a long way to go when it comes to gender equity,” Wilkinson commented.

What do you think of the all-female hosting duo for the Today show? Will you be watching next week?

Don't watch the breakfast shows at all

I dont watch it but I think the choice of hosts is good. Great to see a couple of good looking women with uplifting personalities as hosts. A huge improvement!

By the way, Lisa's student daughter should know that there is nothing wrong with being a mum. And if anyone was at all interested in Tony Jones I'm sure they would mention his fatherhood status.

I do not think Lisa's daughter meant it the way you are interpreting it at all.  She did not say there

was anything wrong with being a mum - just pointing out wht they sould mention it.

I always thought that it is mentioned because it is an acheivement?? Along with a list of other acheivements. It is a bio, by way of introduction, just putting out a little search for commonality. I suspect most of the audience are mums. They want to retain the existing audience plus attract new viewers.

What we should be complaining about is that very few dads get recognition for the wonderful work they do, by being a dad.

Again, I say there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a mum, or a dad. It is often assumed that Fathers dont play an important roll in raising a family. I know many fathers dont make it to dad status but when ever they are introduced at a new workplace they are recognised as a father of 2 or 4 or whatever.

Lisa's student daughter seems to be complaining that Tony Jones was improperly introduced to his audience, but that is the ABC, they do things differently.

The predictable and trite Wilkinson is suffering from lack of relevance syndrome since she jumped ship to Ch 10.  She is stale.  Without Karl playing the stereotypical idiot male there is no opportunity for Lisa to act schoolmarm and pull faces about.

Time for Lisa to put a red nappy on her noggin and be crated off to the jungle?

No. Only watch ABC24 breakfast show.

Is it just me, or has there been an increase over recent years of more women presenters on tv, maybe it’s my imagination working overtime, but most times when watching supposedly news stories, you here we will now cross to Maggie, Gertie, Julie or some other female, and the new face of men’s cricket is female, I am not declaring that they are better or worse than men, I wouldn’t dare, but it just seems gender equality on tv seems to be unbalanced, or maybe it’s cheaper to employ women, then it’s a smart business move, they are far better to look at than men anyway, not that should be the criteria.

Hear, not here oops

Why do we need gender balance Jim? This is a cause taken up by those who claim that women are underrepresented in business, are lower paid, have less superannuation savings and levels of government. As Maggie Thatcher once said, “I would hate a person to ask me a question, are you a quota woman or are you a merit woman?".

We are lied to about pay gaps and super and now Labor wants women to be paid more super even though they do less work than men. An article in today's media has highlighted the lack of men in teaching. Will Labor freeze women out of teaching until the gender gap is equal?

On a personal preference, I have problems listening to women on radio as sometimes their voices aren't strong enough for my hearing. Other than that, I care little about who does what job as long as they are qualified, experienced and suited for the position.

Sorry Old Man, I was being cynical, I don’t believe in all this gender identity rubbish and pay gap rubbish, I recall going back to about 1980 I was told by my bosses that we had to diversify and employ more women, I told him of my concerns as we worked in heavy industry, My concerns were ignored, the minute we employed the first group of women the union payed us a visit, they got exactly the same pay rates as the men, with a few differences, we had to supply them with overalls, which was before men got clothing issued, we had to give them an afternoon tea break which didn’t go down to well with the men, we also had to put a maximum weight that they could lift in place, finally we couldn’t put women on the little furnaces we had for forging, it was considered to be too hot for them. I must stress that none of the women asked for any of these conditions, but naturally they didn’t refuse taking advantage. I guess in effect they were paid more than the men because the actually worked less hours, I was also instructed not to quiz them too much when they disappeared sometimes during the day. It did make my job a little harder being limited where I could put them.

Seems to be an equality issue as all 3 free to air station now have female sports reporters and I'm not convinced they know what they are talking about half the time, just reading the script.  What I really find annoying is all the female "on the spot" reporters who look like a bunch and bimbos and talk slowly like village idiots and sound like they are telling a story instead of reporting in a normal voice and speed.

I lost all respect for Wilkinson when she left the Today show, not because she left but because of the way she left. She demanded equal pay for the male presenter when she was not doing the same work, she had outside contracts which prevented Channel Nine from fully utilising her in other roles and she claimed that it was all done for "equality for females".  When we read that contracts in that industry takes weeks, if not months, to be finalised, how did she suddenly have a contract signed within hours of leaving Channel Nine? My cynicism suggests that it was all a publicity stunt.

hey `old man` how did you get that `felix` moveable onto your profile...i`ve tried allsorts to upload one of my favourite NO LUCK!

I find the moving Felix annoying, like a bug running across my screen and very distracting when I am reading or typing.

I found it on the internet, saved it and uploaded it as an avatar here. I'm not very computer literate, I just followed the instructions.

Sorry musicveg, should I change it to this one for you?

Very funny, a little less annoying but don't need anymore bugs in my house thanks, I have one that seems to live on my screen, must be attracted to the warmth and light.

Not one comment here is saying anything about what she was pointing out, that female presenters are always noted for their age and whether they are a parent or not, not too mention how they have their hair and what clothes they wear. Women in the work force are under a lot of pressure that men don't have, this has to change.

I think most people are over the myth of disadvantaged women, but you know who make the most comments about other women, got it in one, I recall not that long ago a woman presenter made one of her colleagues another woman change her top because it clashed with her top, they put that pressure on themselves, I have seen men’s children being mentioned on tv and the status of their parenthood, and as for hair it seems that the new look is just fell out of bed look, and that’s for men and women.

I see no reason to have "gender balance" or quotas in any sphere. The best person for the job should be the one to get it. Personally...I find a bevy of females anywhere quite boring and would much rather have a mix of both male and female.

I don't watch breakfast shows but to see a group of women chattering inanely first thing in the morning..would certainly put me off my brekkie...

I agree I like a mix too, and I won't turn on the TV until after dinner, too busy enjoying life not watching it.

I doubt very much if Channel 9 (or an other station for that matter) will be much perturbed at being lectured by this smug Polyanna whose irrelevance is highlighted by the fact she has to use her student daughter to make her point. Guess what? No one is listening.
