What is is you are trying to do? Maybe we can help, or may know of someone who can.

Sorry being unwell, drs appointments etc.

Over five years scanned all family photos going  back to my mum and dad's and hubbies mum and dad's and our family too of course. I am 55. Took me five years to do as part of that was working full time, then got sick, and things took longer.

Sorted them into Years - then into folders - so Birthday Julie (all her birthday, birth photos here), Holidays - Family - sub folders for each holiday etc.

This was on windows. Computer went kerplonk. As had ipad, thought easier to purchase macbook pro. Last October this was. So ill, trying to learn Apple system not easy.

Hubby imported stuff over and folders were skewered, as sorts in date order, no folders. Apple took them off, and reput them on (in same way - duh). Spent ages putting them back in albums I think it is on i Photos.

At this point had two copies of everything and in some folders three copies of things.

Decided early this year to get out of iPhoto's and made a desktop folder, Called it Correct Photo's. So when I go through one folder on iPhoto (to straighten mainly and geotag holidays and where great grand-dad lived etc) and delete harshly, I then export them to the Correct Photo's Folder within their own folder (as you would in Windows). Then have to go through and delete from iPhoto's, and Photos (which I don't like), and when I click on File Finder window under Pictures this is what comes up. Darn, can't copy screen shot in here.

Comes up with the following:

iPhoto Library.photolibrary

iPhoto Slideshows with arrow

Old IPhoto Folders (about 7)

Photos

Photos (original).

So have to go through all these to delete the ones I have moved to Correct Photos. It is so time consuming. I am running out of time.

I find iPhotos good for geotagging and straightening (don't want perfect photos) but would like on the Correct Ones to do some minor editing. So looking for program that is free or not much and "easy to use" that will allow me to shadow, or erase some scratches on older photos.

I am probably 1/20th through. I wish to then save my favourites on my computer and the rest to an external drive.

I use time machine...but that is going to overtime rewrite over them isn't it? I think? So need advise on what I ought to get to save them on, Just ALL the photos. If I open photos (orig) and there are heaps of dupes in their it's 18.3 Gb if I go to correct which are deleted from photos (orig) I have 33.87 Gb, this is because when I export them from iPhoto I use maximum settings. that may give you idea of how much room I may need.

I also am looking for dupe finder (is there one that works) and a program like iMovies that is easier. I find it to onerous, and would like to leave some little funny movies (about a minute long) interspersed with photos.....But can't do it on iMovie...can't get head around it. I need simple.

I would love help if available. But want the folders set up as I have them. As relevant to me and family.

Sorry for the delay and thank you for the offer. Much appreciated. Live in northern Melbourne Elthamish area.....

thanks,

Belinda

Hi Belinda,

A good free photo-editing and retouching program is called Pixlr, and you can find it online at www.pixlr.com – there are smartphone versions, web apps and desktop versions that you can use for free. It's quite good too.

As far as saving your images, yes, I would use an external drive just to be safe. I would also upload them to a cloud drive such as Google Photo or your iCloud. Check out this article for information on how to get your photos safe and saved forever for free.

And if you'd like a good duplicate deleter, try duplicate annihilator, which you can find at http://brattoo.com/propaganda/ or http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18748/duplicate-annihilator

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much! Much appreciated.
