Malcolm Turnbull to face a leadership challenge on Monday?

As the Prime Minister approaches what is expected to be his 30th Newspoll loss in a row on Monday, rumours suggest that the party room vultures are circling.

Mr Turnbull used the factor of 30 Newspoll losses in a row as a reason for ousting Mr Abbott in September 2015.

Despite the rumours, Senior cabinet minister Peter Dutton yesterday told 2GB radio listeners that the Prime Minister had his backing and that "If i can't be loyal to the leader then my judgment is I resign".

Dr Norman Abjorensen of the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy told news.com.au that he did not get the same "air of crisis" that surrounded Tony Abbott's leadership ahead of a challenge against him. Dr Abjorensen pointed out that just before Mr Abbott was voted out in 2015, there was constant talk and discussions among MPs, which isn't occuring regarding Prime Minister Turnbull at this point in time.

Do you believe there will be a leadership challenge against Prime Minister Turnbull in the near future?

This is just Labor propaganda.... fuelled by ABC

Latest news from

From Andrew Jaffrey.

6:30 PM AEST: I have received a PM stating that a parliamentary office has confirmed that this meeting is a false alarm.

I expect we will hear a lot more from radio shock jock Andrew Jaffery leading up to the publication of his book later this year.

Who else have they got. Tony Abbott. Ha ha

Who cares?

They are toast.

Certainly not before the next electiion..that would be suicide...

At present only three choices exist..Peter Dutton (heaven forbid)...Scott Morrison (don't think so)..and then there's Julie..but I think she is enjoying life as Foreign Minister too much...anyway..if it happens..she's my choice...

She sure has aged a lot since 2013

I do prefer this haircut to the current one

If it were only about hair styles then I would vote for Trump LOL!!!

@ Sophie

yes  Sophie, Julie sends out a clear message. Exercise and good food and as a result healthy seniors.

Bishop might be fit as BUT she looks so darn scraggy -- and even though she appears to do her job well???    I do not like her and judge her on her choice of what she did while working for Hardies, there is NO way a person with a good moral compass could treat dying people this way.

She IMO could have chosen a legal career other than that one.

She also has shown she is willing to rob OR taxes by spending them on her private "öutings"  along with her partner/lover/ who also has a stack of money

Scraggy? Who me? Perhaps I should come to you for beauty advice!

Bring back Peter Costello.

Some over 60's facebook page was suggesting that might be a possibility this morning.  Can't see it myself, but I think he would definitely give Bill Shorten a run for his money if it did happen.

We'd have to get rid of Tony Abbott though.  The media would have a field day if we had an Abbott and Costello Government. LOL

Leonie 60% of the population wouldn't get the joke. But I do:)

Sell the country to the highest bidder

LEONNIE,   we have one now,   just by another name,     but the same outcome,

What I would like done is if a politician fails at his job or does the wrong thing I would like to see them OUTED no back bench and still getting big salaries and all the perks when they leave -- treat them like anyone else that fails in their job SACK THEM.

I know they have been voted in but if they fail then they should be able to be chucked out -- also this rule would surely make them do the right thing

Tom they have already done that

i suppose you must ask yourself, do we really care, it doesnt matter what they do we will still finish up with a useless politicition..

You dead right there pal LOL

Costello was the last of our politicians with ethics and vision

we could do with his help in these dire times

wouldnt trust any of them,   and cant stand TURNBULL,    he has the shifftiest eyes i have ever seen,        we need another WHITLAM,      they were good days,     employment,   money in your pocket,

Yes Cats Whitlam was good and did some very good things

Yep, another Whitlam fan here too.

Financial Review today

Da 2 fat ladies are tossing each other again

Chatting to your reflection in the mirror again Old Geezer???

Australia needs a strong  leader with similar credentials to President Trump. Tony Abbott comes closest, other than him the Liberals are dead in the water. The world is changing and people are opening their eyes to the disastrous policies that had brought most western economies to the brink of disaster. Western Europe ( The EU) is facing a huge back lash against its dictatorial attitude towards sovereign nations in the bloc. The main polticial parties in Australia are aligned and offer no real solutions to the problems this country faces. There are alternatives but knowing that the majority of Australian voters are complacent and ignore what is staring them in the face they will continue with the status quo. Sad, the Australian spirit has been finally broken and the people of this once great country have capitulated and offerred themselves up for sacrifice.

Pete, can it, for goodness sake. How about offering yourself up for "sacrifice" as an example.

Micha my name is not Pete. I know you are obsessed with me but I am already taken. So I cannot sacrifice myself to you, much to your disappointment. Hope Mr Abbott makes a return to the top job. I am sure you agree with my original comment. There is a new world coming and President Trump and those who have a similar policies will make the world a much better place.

That Monday is gone 11 weeks ago .... it is more likely that Biill Shorten will be facing a leadership challenge.

I agree Suze, but Labor have this new type of democracy where a union bosses vote has much more sway than an ordinary Labor Party member. Therefor I think Bill will have the job as long as he does what he is told. And he's doing that. He announced a major anti-business tax policy at a door stop just the other day.

I could be wrong, (I often am) but I think that before the changes put in place by Kevin Rudd took effect the rank and file members didn't even get a vote. The leader was chosen purely by Caucus.

Anyway this is how it was decided.

ALP vote breakdown Bill Shorten/Anthony Albanese

Caucus votes 63.95% (55 votes)  36.05% (31 votes)

ALP membership (About 30k votes)  40.08%  59.92%

Overall vote  52.02%  47.98%

As a matter of interest how is the leader chosen  in the LNP?  Do the rank and file members get a vote?

The Constitution states that the political party with the majority in the House of Representatives will be invited by the Governor-General (representing Australia's head of State, the Queen) to form the government. The Prime Minister is chosen as leader, through a vote by members of his or her parliamentary party.

Adrianus

I only put that heading up that it is HISTORY ...some 3 months old and it never happened.

...as far as I can see it was just some FAKE news from a media frenzy.

Thanks for that information Suze, but that's not really what I was looking for.

While I know churning of leaders has become common it is more often the case that a new leader is chosen after an election is lost.

When John Howard, for instance, lost his seat (and the 2007 election) a new leader had to be chosen for the LNP in opposition. I doubt the Governor General had much to do with that but I may stand corrected.

I guess what I'm asking, is do the rank and file LNP members ever get to vote for their leader?  I suspect not.

Hope this helps Leonie

In 2009 the LNP was in Opposition and Tony Abbott became leader because of one single vote.  At the time, Malcolm Turnbull was leader but there was tension about Rudd's proposed an emissions trading scheme (ETS).   Turnbull supported it with great enthusiasm but it upset many of the LNP climate change sceptics, so the party was asked to elect a new leader.  I think Malcolm got a huge shock when Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey put their hands up.  Tony Abbott won by one vote and went on to become PM at the next Federal election.

Fast forward to 2015 – Malcolm Turnbull elected Liberal Leader 54 votes to 44 for Tony Abbott.
