More frozen veggies being recalled due to listeria fears

Another day, another recall of frozen vegetables due to listeria fears.

One-kilogram packs of Black & Gold Mixed Vegetables are being recalled from IGA, Campbells and Independent Grocers across NSW, Victoria and Tasmania due to fears they contain the potentially deadly bacteria.

Consumers are advised not to eat the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund, the NSW Food Authority says.

In February and March, six people died after a national outbreak of listeria linked to rockmelon.

Early last month, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi supermarkets removed a number of frozen vegetable products from their shelves due to listeria fears after the bacteria were discovered in frozen spinach and green bean samples from a Hungarian processing plant.

Eating food containing listeria generally has little effect on most people, but older people and those with compromised immune systems are vulnerable. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhoea.

Anyone with concerns should see their doctor.

Well I bet it was NOT AUSSIE owned and grown???????????

BUY AUSSIE OWNED AND GROWN

It makes you wonder why these vegies are still allowed to be imported from Hungary?

If the vegetables are cooked (boiled) it will kill the listeria.

I would be interested to know if its our health food fads of veggie drinks that are crossing safety boundaries that were a given when we were growing up.

I would also like to know if it has anything to do with our 3 bin system and recycled green bin garbage being fed back onto the crops.

Does that mean that all the people that died ate their frozen vegetables raw? does not add up.

Some people only parboil veggies and if they are already contaminated, those who have a weak immune sysem can be affected.

Apparently they do, chichi.  There are a lot of raw food people and I suppose they just thaw frozen vegetable and eat them.  As Rosret and Kiah say the vegetables have to be properly cooked to kill listeria.

Unfortunately you can't cook many fruits so listeria can creep in with things like rockmelon.

I microwave all my frozen vegetables but sometimes steam cabbage, also I rinse my frozen veggies before microwaving; I hope it solves any contamination problems.

Even if it's Aussie owned and grown , disgruntled farm / food production workers might sabotage  by poisoning the food chain.

I reckon much of the worry is because  listeria in the mother often leads to miscarriage or stillbirth. A store selling goods infected with Listeria would probably face class action. Having said this listeria infections are very rare among pregnant women.  It’s more common to suffer from Staph/Strep infections ie ‘food poisoning’.

We nearly always eat fresh at home  but occaisionally (once or twice a week at most) use frozen peas (only Birdseye as they are from Tasmania). These are the only frozen veges we consume and we always steam them for about 10 minutes. Do not know what we have when we eat out, but ignorance is bliss.

Used to love my bought frozen veg ... so handy/convenient when living alone, but after the recent scares, now buy market fresh and freeze "extras".

Local farmers must love this.
