New Member with questions...thanks

Regarding the dates posted on this site. I see the site has an Australian address, why then are the dates in American format = mm/dd/yyyy.

Regarding posting of avatars, the directions are simple enough, but I have had no success trying from photobucket and a small pic on my desktop. I see Hughie has successfully posted his, so what am I doing wrongly that I cannot post a 8.0kb .gif?

Is there a New posts button in Meeting Place > Tech Talk > as allot of the posts are old so it would make it much easier to find the new posts with one? I would appreciate a reply as to who owns this site and maybe some information on mods and Admin also.

Thank you,

kind regards,

PS. Found Most Recent Topics thanks, at the bottom of the Meeting Place Tech Talk link

Hi tallin,

I also cannot upload an avatar.

Requirements are that it be 100 by 100 and 50kb or less.

Formats can be jpg, gif or png

I tried to upload a jpg 60 by 34 which is 788bytes and got the message "An error was encountered while attempting to assign your image"

I have tried several times but as yet have not had any luck.

Gerry

Dosn't seem to work for pics or avators now on this site very sad really......

Phyl.

Read Hughie's post in Hot topics Seniors Helping Seniors, he worked it out, neither of our Avatars load, and I get no email notifcations either.........wonder who is monitoring this site with all it's problems?

Hughie thought that he had worked it out but now says that he has not ...........I can not get the system to work for me either and I have been trying for more than a year .........You could PM Admin direct ............I have tried to but that does not work either ............with the current problems experienced by SHS it seems that this forum could really go ahead if some of the technical crap were to be fixed

I despair I really do .........................

Hi everyone...dose anyone have also problems with the page opening up....I only have it on Senior sight....maybe if we send a message to ..CONTACT US.... that is right down the bottom ...they may be able to help as with this problems... we hope....lol....have a great day all.. mybe night... God Bless..

Brigitte, I often have to refresh the page during loading...it helps.

Koko hope you are not still using Internet Explorer!!

Firefox has no problems on the site as the Webmaster has suggested to you all.

Did you get CCleaner too as it clears out the crap you collect every time you go on the internet and if you don't clear it out you gradually slow down.

www.mozilla.com for Firefox 3.

www.ccleaner.com for CCleaner also cleans up you registry of those bits left behind when you try out a program - hate it and get rid of it.

Also hope you are using a decent firewall - the windows one does not tell you if any program is calling home etc.

So you need to get one that does.

www.Zonealarm.com free version - includes the whole package so say no to the security as you can get free programs which are as good or better.

For Anti virus a good free one is Avast as it updates itself daily.

SuperAntiSpyware is a very good free malware but you have to manually download updates in free version.

Can get all these by google or go to

www.majorgeeks.com good downloads of most and free of virus and crap. Also gives you what evry program does and how many downloads they have had of it and if freeware or shareware etc.

Mentioned this to the tech, and he said yes Mozilla/Firefox is good...but put me on to a newer one.."Google Chrome".

Downloaded and forgot it.

Have tried it this evening , and guess what no problems with AS.

Have just downloaded Avira, which is good...works away in the background...so I'll try that for a while.

SuperAntiSpyware is a very good free malware but you have to manually download updates in free version.

I'll look at that as the one I have now is not the best.

Thanks for all that info, BigVal.

I have not been able to focus very well on detail for some time due to crook back, and the heat has not been very conducive.

Google Chrome looks good, still experimenting.

Thhankyou.

Koko

Koko - will have a look at Google Chrome too. Must be brand new as haven't heard of it but haven't been onto the tech site for a while.

Avira is a good one - just that I have been with Avast for a long time and had no problems so stick to it. Both are highly recommended by techs - both are free and far better than Norton's or any of the paid versions which use up so much space and slow you down.

Norton's is so bad they issue a clean up tool to get rid of it when you are fed up enough!!! have to as it is insidious - everywhere!!!

I have two Malware/spyware programs - Super Anti spyware and Spybot Search and Destroy - as the techs all tell us to have at least two. One may find something the other misses and visa versa. :)

Another little free program you will love is WinPatrol. It puts a little scottie dog which woofs on your task bar which watches for any additional start up programs being added and tells you and says do you want it or not. Also allows you to delay the start up of programs for 30 secs which is enough to start up a lot quicker etc. Google Winpatrol to get it o go to major geeks and search.

Also as you love dogs - have you ever been to www.webshots.com and downloaded their photos of all sorts of dogs and lots of good desk top and screen saver photos.

I hope the back is better today and the heat is a bit less in Melbourne - it is a lot cooler in Tassie but we have had some hot days for us - too hot for me and it only got up to 32.2C - moved down here to get away from the heat - average is 21.5c and that's enough for me these days:)

That's good advice, and I have tried many times to find another good one...I have Spybot..., but my search skills are not the best. Have now downloaded Super anti spyware on your recommendation.

The firewall will be next on the list.

The other bits and pieces you mention, I'll look at.

You're a fountain of info, and I appreciate it tremendously.

My back is slowly improving..it has been a long process, but hopefully on the way now. Thanks for your kind wishes.

44degrees to-day, but with a cool change on the way to-night.

Koko heard it is cooler today in Melbourne anyway. Hope so for your sake as I loath hot weather these days cant take it - we got to 32.2c which is very unusual for us and most of us do not have air conditioning unlike living on the mainland as it is not that hot here most of the time. Hope you have one at least.

Turned on to get Insiders and what a shock the bush fires overnight had killed 25 people and many others injured and homes lost. Awful - hope our posters on here are all okay.

If these were deliberately lit - it makes one so very very mad to think they have killed people as well as causing so much loss of life to poor animals and loss of whole livelihoods and all those precious memories if not taken with them by way of photos and mementos of family.

Its is really time something harsher was awarded anyone who lights fires for their l=pleasure. My pleasure would be to have them flogged publicly and if they cause the loss of lives - hung.

But then I am not a softie leftie nor an apologist for not being able to hand out justice to the victims instead of justice to the lawyers by way of repeat fees and perpetrators by way of revolving door.:(

Hey Koko we will get you zooming along on that computer yet - tally ho........here comes Koko faster than the speed of sound - Ha Ha Ha.
