No Broadband Available

I'm very disappointed - no ADSL available in my area. Something about pair gains system/rim with Telstra. In other words, all ADSL has been used up. My only other option is satellite. I have to check that out, but I fear it may be too expensive.

The further I check, the worse it seems to become. My last hope seems to be the Aust. Broadband Guarantee, which I can't really check out until I phone them on Monday. No wireless broadband, no ADSL. I may be stuck with dial up for quite a long time. AHH! The joys of rural living.

dear Bev G, why not try Mobile Dodo Wireless Broadband, it works in rural area's. Roy. S.

Seems I'm in a blind spot for mobile broadband too, unless I have an external tower antennae stuck up on my roof. I know that mobile phone coverage is very poor here - have to drive a kilometre or so to get reception. Sounds like satellite may be the only answer if I want to go broadband. Have to check on Monday. Thanks for the thought Roy.

My Son is in the same position--he is unable to get BB and is still on dial up--wireless is too doesn't work and sat' is too dear.

Seems I qualify under the Australian Broadband Guarantee for subsidised satellite broadband. I'm considered to be in category D - unable to get affordable broadband any other way. Just waiting for all the paper work to be sent to me.

Maybe your son should check it out too Plan B the phone number to call is 1800 883 488.

Yes he is able to get that BUT it runs out very dear--and very few downloads for big price--at least he is on unlimited now.

Sorry for the delay as I have been away for 2 weeks

The deeper I delve into it, the better it becomes. Seems I'll be able to get about 7Gig, on/off peak @ 256/128 for about $29.95 per month - half price for the first 6 months. No upfront charges. My computer complies, so I'm going for it. Has to be better that the dial up I have, even though it is umlimited.

The half price is half the $29.95. Only have to apply before 31st December to get that. Then the price reverts to $29.95, guaranteed for the next three years.

Which company are you thinking of going with ?

I have been with 2 providers on satellite broadband, one I would never recommend and one that was ok.

There are 2 main satellites, Optus and Ipstar.

A company "Activ8" uses the Ipstar satellite and seems to be the best priced for what you get.

A good idea is to visit the Whirlpool forum and go through the messages in the satellite section so you can see what problems or good stories others have had.

Also Satellite has a latency problem due to the distance the signal has to travel which affects things like Skype, but it is far superior to dial up.

I am now with bigpond wireless which is faster but expensive.

Cheers,

Gerry
