“No wonder we have an obesity epidemic!!”: Nutritionist slams Coles

A Coles shopper has shared a video showing the irresponsible placement of special junk food product specials at the end of each Coles supermarket aisle.

“No wonder we have an obesity epidemic!!” said Jessica Lowe who runs the the Happy Happy Nutrition Facebook and Instagram pages.

“I can’t believe the crap that is put on all of the promotional ends!” she wrote.

“I use to work in retail sales so I know all about promo ends being where consumers shop from and so do the supermarkets, which is exactly why they put high profit items on ends without considering what they are promoting.”

“This is why we have an obesity epidemic in Australia and the world!” she added.

“Seriously I know this is an over the top rant but the supermarket giants need to become a bit more ethical and stop thinking so much about profits- what is life without health! The reason these processed foods are on sale with 20 per cent off, 25 per cent or even 50 per cent off is because the food is crap so even when the supermarkets knock the price down by 50 per cent they still make huge profits! It’s not expensive to put processed crap in a box!”

“It costs a lot more to drink soda than it does to drink water and eating poor quality food leaves you feeling dissatisfied which results in eating more because your body craves real nutrients..... real food!” she concluded.

“End of rant!”

Coles released a statement to news.com.au which said: “Coles is passionate about supporting the health and wellbeing of the communities in which we operate by providing quality, service and value at our stores and through our partnerships with community organisations such as Little Athletics.

“Coles donated two million bananas to local clubs during the Little Athletics 2017-2018 season to provide kids with a nutritious snack during competitions.

“We have developed targets to reduce salt, sugar and saturated fat across the Coles Brand product range, beginning with a program focused on Coles Brand nutritional snacks and cereals.

“Responding to customer feedback on the use of colours, Coles Brand has removed 28 artificial colours from products and continues to remove other additives across a range of products

“Coles has also introduced Health star ratings on our products, which are currently displayed on over 1,550 Coles Brand products.

“In addition to these initiatives, Coles Brand provides a range of products for customers with special dietary requirements. This includes people who require gluten free options and products free of allergens such as nuts and dairy. We also cater for customers requiring vegan and vegetarian options.”

Do you think there is too much junk-food promotion in supermarkets? Do you agree with Ms Lowe’s argument?

If Coles is so concerned re healthy  food, then this crap should be on the lowest shelf out of sight. Coles does not address the point re  placement in their statement.

The supermarkets are paid big money by the manufacturers for those end spaces.  Most people would be surprised just how much money is paid to supermarkets, both big and small, to promote products.  They are paid for displays, shelf position, specials etc. and they don't even have to use their own staff to manage the various promotions and shelf positioning

Sales staff from the various manufacturers do an awful lot of work in supermarkets, and it is certainly not restricted to Coles or even to the supermarket 'giants' as stated in this particular rant.

The big supermarkets care not a hoot about what they sell -- it is all about what they make the most money on and they have taken SO much AUSSIE stuff off the shelves and replaced with imported downright CRAP

RE:  Jessica Lowe

“This is why we have an obesity epidemic in Australia and the world!”

Why does Media promote these so called eggspurts :) ???

Is Jessica paying them for advertizing ? Because what she is saying is absolute nonsense.

The only things that I've bought going out of a Supermarketor as she calls them promotional ends, is Newspapers and a freezer bag.

Yes there are a few chocs and gum there but in the supermarket there is a whole aisle of assorted chocs there.

Oh for goodness sake! Stop blaming others for failure of the individual shopper to make better food choices. It wouldn't matter to me where these frankenfoods are placed or how low the price, I just don't buy them. Ever.

By not wasting money on this rubbish, I can treat myself to a more expensive 'luxury' item in the fresh food section, like raspberries for example, or fresh figs in season.

Guess who doesn't have a weight problem?

Spot on Suze, it's yet another fat fantasy being peddled by the holier than thou brigade.

Supermarts are paid to feature/promote suppliers goods. The more they pay the more prominent the position, something to do with free enterprise. Regardless of retail outlet they all offer the same opportunity and suppliers are generally booked-in well in advance of 'show time'.

Using Ms Jessica Lowes' logic does it follow that fatties have no intention of buying up on binge shit simply because they need to conduct an inhouse search to sate their urge.

The obesity epidemic has little to do with featured product in retail shop space and considerably more to do with fat addled brains.

In closing;

Seriously I know this is an over the top rant but fat bastards need to become a bit more self conscious and stop thinking so much about crap food - what is life without health! The reason these processed foods are on sale with 20 per cent off, 25 per cent or even 50 per cent off is because the food is crap so even when the supermarkets knock the price down by 50 per cent they still make huge profits! It’s not expensive to put processed crap in a box! (To which I'll add);

It'll take some squeezing to process the fatties into their box unless they trim down by 50% at the very least.

If you don't have self control, don't blame the supermarkets. Teach your children good eating habits at home.

Unfortunately parents these days expect the schools to do it....

I don’t know why Coles was singled out. They all do it. Really, if you want biscuits, chocolate, chips etc. you will find them. There’s a whole fruit and vegetable section. Why didn’t she film people shopping there!

Product placement must work or companies wouldn't pay for it but I'm amused/shocked/surprised when I peek at what's in trolleys ahead of me at the supermarket.  Usually overweight people have a trolley full of processed rubbish/animal flesh or fatty dairy products and very little or no  fruit and vegetables.  It's obvious what the problem is but the bigger problem is how to get them to change their ways?  If only the companies producing healthy products could afford product placement!

please jessica lowe worry about your own family and leave others to their own, fat, thick, obese or whatever you call other persons, it is only in your imagination, as to accuse retailers to put wares in favourite sales positions, what would you suggest they do and as for attacking coles only, it shows your precipitous anti coles attitude to this question, I have no shares or even shop at coles, however I object to this disgraceful and ambiguous article just written to blacken one retailer's entity, I am sure there are more urgent questions or articles for ylc to be debated, as a matter of fact I never peak at somebody's purchases in front of me or if they are thin, lean, overweight or obese, I accept their right and freedom to purchase whatever they put in their trolley, what pleasure it would be if everybody minded their own bussiness, how better the world would be,

heemskerk99, I can accept their right and freedom to purchase what they want but our health system is not and will not cope with their current and future needs, and it is therefore not an individual's issue but a community problem that is everybody's business.

go veg it got nothing to do with you what I eat or put in my trolley, as a matter of fact it are the persons like you who by poking their noses in and are uneducated on the matter at hand that are doing more harm then good to this issue, it is the modern world of computers, mobile phone's etc that are doing the damage, as a kid we ate bread with lard and crackle, still lick my lips thinking of that, potatoes meat and cabbage with real butter, all food which is now declared as fattening, we did not know what fat free milk was, we drank it straight from the cow, meat pancakes were our favourites, real yoghurt we had by the litres, cheese we made ourself as was bacon, sausages, etc., yet by bedtime al those so-called calories were run off, we walked to school, 5 km every morning and every afternoon back, we played outside till mealtime was called, we ate like hungry wolfs, always were allowed a second taking and never leave table till dish was empty and I mean empty including the vegetables, may it be brussels sprout, broad beans or whatever, week-end's were spend with eating more or less all day, playing outside and the highpoint was the roast with plenty of gravy, however now you are saying it are the supermarkets who are making you and your kids obese, just ask yourself when was the last time you or your wife did not take the kids by car to school but walked, when was the last time your kids played footy or cricket in the park, when was the last time your kids hopped on their bikes and rode around the neighbourhood, when was the last time you saw your kids not on their mobile, when was the last time you took your kids on a camping adventure, when was the last time you took them fishing, when was the last time they were not watching a screen or allowed to take their mobiles or computers into their bedrooms when it was bedtime and then tell us it are the supermarkets who are to blame for to-day's obesity.   please get out of our lives and make sure your family is not that community problem and so should everybody else interfering with anybody else lives, I am sick to death listening and reading strangers telling me how to live my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
