Windows 7 is now released to techs etc to try out - read the link.

BTW wait until all the bugs are out of any new system before trying it.

Also size if everything in computers the bigger the better to fit in all.

I will stick with XP for as long as possible as everything else is compatible.

I certainly wouldnt abandon XP at this stage unless I was positive there was a positive replacement. Im always on the lookout to learn more. But at this stage if we're on a good system then stick to it.

with reference to Linux . and reply to .. westozzy,

. interesting blog ... link below..... in regard to looking into and trying out Linux .. without actually partitioning and installing. .... for me Its looking even more attractive.

Hi Chick, well I went for it and used Wubi to download Ubuntu its instruction was click download,go get a cup of coffee and when you get back its all there. Well I clicked D/L and up popped a message telling me it would be around 9 hours to complete, so I went to bed and woke up early, I get up at 4am anyway and half asleep thought what the hells that so i clicked the corner and off it went, then I realised what I had done. Anyway I did it again and 8 hours later it was finished, its here on my computer but Im blowed if Ican figure out how to open it. it just wont have a bar of opening. Il persevere and keep you posted. If you do ths Chick and I dont know where you live but I could have gone from perth to Sydney for my cup of coffee and I would have still got back in time to see it finish installing.

WESTOZZY

YOU ARE VERY BRAVE I WAS GOING TO BE MORE CAUTIOUS AND TRACK DOWN A CD AS I READ THAT YOU CAN START THE PROGRAME UP FROM A CD AND LOOK AT IT WITHOUT ACTUALLY INSTALLING IT.. on your computer .

I hope it works for you.. that length of time to install seems :bug: awfully long... hope the coffee was good, that would be some consolation.

Chick I have read very good reports on Linux and Ibuntu and as you say everything is free. I just havent enough knowledge of partitioning to run both or all on my computer but Ive never read a Linux complaint yet. I guess mainly because its such a minority market.

Or could it just be that it isn't the PITA that is put out by Mr Gates?

I have been running Linux ( Mepis ) now for some years & it just gets better & better.

Unless you have some particular reason to run MS Windas I wouldn't recommend running both systems as usually MS is unnecessary & it's like having a foot on each of 2 islands & never committing to a proper transition.

If you do choose Linux, you'll find that every new day that you spend with it is one less day that you will want to spend with Microshyte.

The support now available from any decent distro is impressive & usually very friendly.

And re partitioning ?

With Mepis it is normally a piece of cake. Just let Mepis take care of it for you.

Hi guys,

OUCH ! that sounds painful - new to your forums here so my sequence of postings may seem erratic as I've just responded to articles as I've spotted them.

I would suggest that you might try Mepis which is the Linux distro I use.

After downloading & burning the CD ( as an ISO format ) it generally takes about 30 minutes to install a fully running system on an HD. Compare that with the eternity that MS takes.

The same CD can be used to operate from & try the Mepis distro ( live CD ) without installing to HD if you are unsure but you can't beat a proper install to really begin to get a proper feel.

Mepis is also Debian compliant & uses the KDE GUI ( desktop )

All these names quickly begin to roll from your tongue as easily as the MS terms did within a week or two of familiarisation.

http://www.mepis.org/mirrors < perchance you decide to download it.

( PS don't forget to set your BIOS to boot from the CDROM drive of course. )

Bender,

Thank you for the info.. much appreciated, I like the idea of booting from the CD ... will give it a go .. Have an older computer I'm going to experiment on .. not confident enough to jump in boots n all with faithful ole ACER.. thank you..

It is ‘staying with’ to avoid lots of unnecessary expenses while waiting for MS to get it’s act straightened out. No one should be expected to toss all their software.

Masone, there is no need for anyone to toss out all ( or any ) of their software.

Maybe it was lost in translation but what was suggested was to run IMHO a better system than Vista. Also be aware that unlike MS... Linux distributions are almost all FREE as is the software that runs under the LINUX OS.

For example I am using Linux Mepis as I write this & I'm using a Mozilla browser perhaps as you did when you replied.

If I write a letter here to print for say a meeting I can save the data & send that same information in a format that is viewable under MS. But I am not tied into the very dubious Bill Gates empire. If you are in any doubt then simply do a search of the many Millions of dollars that the company has been fined in recent years.

Why would you want to have to pay for the dubious right to use such a system as Vista when a better alternative is freely available? Ignorance? Sheer stubbornness?

I find it hard to comprehend.

You need toss out nothing, but could conversely gain access to a totally new & wider world of sharing.

..

I have just got a new computer.

A Compaq Presario, 4GB ram & 500GB hard drive and windows 7.

All the software i had with XP works fine except for my anti-virus.

The reason being that the new one is a 64 bit OS wheras most are 32 bit.

It is very fast and much better than Vista, similar in some ways but an improvement.

The windows 7 looks like a good operating system.

fwed

What a wonderful New year present for you fwed. Lucky duck........................

I will save your info. as our old computer really needs to retire so the time is coming nigh

for us to upgrade and it seems such a hassle so as you have done the ground work :) will take advantage of that as you do seem a very clever little pickle ;-)

Thanks matey

Phyl.
