Oscar-nominated films used to lure fans into scams

If you’ve been inspired to delve into the world of cinema after watching the Oscars, you’re not alone. The only problem is that you may be targeted by scammers.

If you were hoping to download a movie online for free, you’re putting your device and your privacy at risk. Hundreds of ‘free download’ links are actually malware; a type of software designed to gain unauthorized information or damage your computer. At least 20 sites have tricked people into entering their credit cards details or giving away other sensitive information.

The cybersecurity firm Kaspersky says that Joker is most commonly used to lure in film fans, with hundreds of dangerous links promising you a free download.

The best way to avoid such scams is to pay for your movies through a secure platform or support the cinema industry by going to see it in the theatre.

Do you download movies online? Have you ever been targeted by online scammers?

Noi. I either see a movie at the cinema or  see movies on DVDwhen they are released. Safer and cheaper that way

So who would think for one second that a current Oscar nominated film would be made available for free download?
