Paracetamol Linked to Dementia

first of all, here is the good news....................

“A recent supplement to the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease showed that the consumption of moderate amounts of caffeine slowed the cognitive decline associated with aging as well as the incidence of Alzheimer's.” AND “It has also been found that people who regularly smoked marijuana in the 1960s and 1970s rarely develop Alzheimer’s disease.”

so, as we enjoy our cappuccinos and smoke some dope, we can also refrain from taking any paracetamol............................

“paracetamol has recently been shown to work mainly by affecting the brain where it blocks the reuptake of analgesic cannabis chemicals or endocannabinoids. This only reduces pain without improving inflammation. It also gives us an indication as to why paracetamol is more likely to be associated with a degenerative brain disease than NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen) with their mainly local mode of action and anti-inflammatory properties.

That paracetamol is far from harmless can be seen from its tendency to cause kidney and liver damage. According to a recent study 'over use' of acetaminophen is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Paracetamol is especially toxic to the liver if taken together with alcohol and then can easily be fatal. If taken during pregnancy Paracetamol can cause infertility in boys. It is also is also lethal to cats and snakes.

However, until the 1970's phenacetin was the preferred analgesic; it was converted in the body to paracetamol as its active ingredient. In the 1940s, there was a sharp increase in gastric ulcers in young women in Australia, especially in Queensland and New South Wales, followed in the 1960s by an epidemic of kidney failure. At that time it was also recognised that these events were related and were induced by analgesics, in particular by the addictive consumption of Bex® Powder. Originally Bex contained aspirin, phenacetin, and caffeine but in 1976 phenacetin was replaced with paracetamol. It was addictively used by women of all ages—especially housewives, who were encouraged to have "a cup of tea, a Bex and a good lie down"—It was also the mood-altering drug of choice for young women.

Other studies show that with mercury and aluminium in vaccines we can read: "A study of people who received flu shots regularly found that if an individual had five consecutive flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied) his/her chances of getting Alzheimer's Disease is ten times higher than if they had one or no shots".

Interesting thanks Kika

thanks, planb. i've only tried marijuana twice in my life (when younger) and didn't like it. perhaps i should give it another go? however, my chances are good because i drink just one coffee mid-morning, and have never taken paracetamol. won't have the flu shot again as it made no difference at all and i still got the flu.

my mind, (i hope) is helped by blogging, here and at other web sites, and i am getting quite good at controlling my remotes, for two tv's, the airconditioner, and two recording devices. this certainly stretches the good old brain cells! just working out how to use my home phone, ansa-machine and mobile phone requires one to have a masters in technology. still struggling with the phone....one day i'll understand it i hope. love crossword puzzles and occasionally attempt one of the ones on this site. they are very good and quite challenging.

I haven't tried the weed--but I do drink about 3 coffees a day and I work all the technology very well and love it. I don't seem to get much time for cross words--by the time I look after all the house painting etc included.

Interesting read Kika, I lived on anelgesics for the past 40 years due to continual headaches and migraines, have just found a Dr who has fixed the problem, An outside the square Dr, I didn't take paracetamol though, they didn't work for me. I've never tried the weed, had some bex when I was younger but only a couple, Like Plan B I try to keep up with technology, I feel if there is something in this house I want to know how to use it.:) Thanks for the info.

Cheers

Seniors should be lobbying for the right to grow up to six plants and to possess a maximum of 30 grams of dried product without medical prescription,

There is some evidence of benefit and no evidence of harm to older adults. It is most unlikely that consumption by the (non-respected) aged in Australia would influence others to take it up - that is, above and beyond any other influences. Apart from the medicinal effects, the old need something they can afford to assist them through the threats, torments and tedium of age.

In a country where people valued their liberty and freedom higher than in Oz, the aged might thumb their noses en masse at government and get their planter boxes going.

No, I don't use it and didn't bother as a student - competitive sports and worked part-time.
