Well this won't be good for the tourist industry up north.

Why are you scaremongering?

This problem exists mainly in Aboriginal communities with extremely poor or non existent sanitation. How many tourists do you foresee sightseeing there?

These used to only in 3rd world countries -- maybe been brought in with imported things --imported Prawns etc brought Whit Spot here and destroyed OUR prawn farms!

Plus many other imported food has caused so much trouble

They are VERY bad news

Just look at our infrastructure, sewage treatment etc

...we are a third world country.

Yes Suze we are sure getting there very quick these days -- says a lot about the people that govern the place

Look at the number of people that go to Bali and bring back a Bali belly too.

Bali is totally over rated I feel.

Celia, I have not been to Bali or those counties although I am sure the actual country would be beautiful it is the people and their cruel ways and disrespect for wildlife and Animals I do not like and also the lack of cleanliness

The worm problem has nothing to do with Bali belly. When people return to Australia with Bali belly, that does not mean they are bringing back a belly of worms, for goodness sake.

Yes Plan B.  I think Four Corners is using this problem on their Monday Programme.

What particular people and what certain areas in the world is this endemic to?

Is it now in pandemic stage in Australia?

Are migrants, international tourists and backpackers in Australia screened for this infection?

Is there a national plan to screen all patients in Australia suffering diarrhoea, coughing and severe rashes for this infection?

When bowel cancer tests ( as encouraged and promoted, by health authority nationally, in the media) are sent off to  pathology labs, are they screened for this infection at the same time irrespective?

Why not?

The way the government is destroying the environment we are worse than a 3rd world country.

Read the article. The parasite is prevalent in Indigenous communities. It is native to Australia. It has been here longer than you have.

"The worm tends to be seen in areas where septic or sewerage systems are not working very well or properly or at all.'

Precisely.

Is it a water borne parasite or food parasite? Many indigenous communities have water issues, lack of fruit and vegetables for good nutrition too.

It's a sanitation problem.

A great start to the day i will drink my self to death and enjoy it

Well I can tell you a story about water borne parasites! I was holidaying in Bangkok about 10 yrs ago and one day I was walking back to my hotel when the heavens opened up and the heaviest downpour I've ever seen flooded the streets. I took cover for around 30 minutes or so and when it started to ease up I continued to try to get back in murky water almost up to my waist .It was a huge struggle to reach my apartment which I barely managed to do. Next few days I got an extensive rash and felt not too good. Was treated in a major hospital there with some medicine without much change. I returned home soon after and I was referred to a specialist in infectious diseases who suspected the disease in question and was prescribed strong drugs to kill off this parasite and took various tests to monitor progress over a few weeks. He eventually thought it might have been another parasite, or so he said , but whatever type it was it cleared up.During this treatment I told him that it felt like insects were crawling under my skin but he was sceptical and hinted that I was imagining it!! So much for specialists!! I think that I had a close shave that time and was lucky to get out of it virtually unscathed as it never came back.

Sounds awful and as you say you are very lucky.

Did you have the appropriate vaccines before travelling to Bangkok ?

You need to read this!

My husband has had this and has been treated for it, not pleasant.

Schistosomiasis  Also called: bilharzia

The fresh water becomes contaminated from infected animal or human urine or faeces. The parasites penetrate human skin to enter the bloodstream and migrate to the liver, intestines and other organs.A rash, itchy skin, fever, chills, cough, headache, stomach pain, joint pain and muscle aches are symptoms.A medication taken for one to two days can clear the infection.
