Pensioners overseas and coronvirus bonuses

As a pensioner living overseas I did not get the first bonus payment of $750, although I would have happily paid it off my Australian credit card. What happens now with the second payment?

You won't get that onew either.

And it should not be expected either

The payment was designed to stimulate the Australian economy - spending it overseas doesn't help us here at all.  Pensioners, unemployed, etc were chosen first because not having lots of money, they would be most likely to spend it, thus helping people stay in jobs etc.  People with more of a financial cushion, are more likely to save it for the future.

As someone who lived overseas for 10 years, I have to agree with other posters. If you are living in Asia for example, your reduced pension is adequate to live well. Except possibly Thailand, where our $ has dropped to 19bht as against 28-30bht not long ago. It defies logic.

If you want the payment return to Australia.

Most Asian countries are no longer that attractive to Aussie pensioners with our dollar dropping, not only Thailand. Was only a few weeks in Bangkok but found my expenses on par with living here and when you consider the lack of Medicare and PBS meds, this country looks pretty good for an age pensioners.

Spot on Mariner.  If you are unlucky to get this virus I know which health service I would want to look after me!

May I suggest that China should be making all payments to citizens of the world just like they have paid politicians, universities and every other thing they have benefit from. This pandemic spread from Wuhan city.

Chinese recruitment programs such as the Thousand Talents Plan have been exploited by scientists who have downloaded sensitive research files before returning to China, filed patents based on U.S. research, lied on grant applications and failed to disclose money they had received from Chinese institutions, according to a congressional report issued last fall.

The Thinker..I do not think you are thinking clearly at all!

Why should China be paying citizens of the world? Many countries try to recruit "talents" from other countries.

It is the respective countries that should not allow this to happen..these traitors should be punished by their own governments..and..I believe the Harvard professor got his just desserts.

Don't forget that many developments in all fields have been patented by opportunists as theose who did the original work wanted it to be freely available to all.

Globalisation was pushed by BIG Corporations so they could move higher cost production from countries such as the U.S., Germany etc to low labour cost countries to increase their profit. In the low labout cost countries they learnt how to produce products and the essentials of product design from the actions of those Corporations.

China is the biggest example of this and the Chinese are both intelligent and productive so learnt well and quickly. Perhaps a finger can be pointed at them but that finger should also be pointed at the effects of Globalisation.

My son's friend who is in England looking after her elderly mother said an airliner advertised tickets back to Australia in the coming week. She rang up and was disgusted to hear the ticket cost $8,000.00.

that is irrelevant when you look at Katies clothing stores in Australia promoting hand sanitiser at $60 a bottle. The pandemic has brought out the true colours of many and GREED is at the top ofthe list.

I am actually sharing produce from my veggie garden for thos less fortunate than me. Go figure.

On the patenting... I know two inventors... they both quoted that on average only one to two percent ever make any money... one is very successful, the other put up the house etc and went through the patent procedure. A US company bought the patents for several million just prior to the GFC... the company went bust and he ended up getting nothing. He is working to 70 to pay of his debts. Meanwhile his invention is in use all over the world... wonder who is reaping the benefits?
