PM condemns Joyce, bans sex with staffers

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has condemned Barnaby Joyce for his "shocking error of judgment" in having an affair with staffer Vikki Campion.

"He knows that he let down his wife and daughters," said Mr Turnbull.

He says Mr Joyce's leave time should be spent reflecting on his actions and his position in government.

"He needs that leave. He needs that time to seek forgiveness and understanding from his wife and girls, he needs to make a new home for his partner and their baby, who is coming in April," he said.

In an attempt to quell the scandal, the PM has announced a ban on sexual relationships between ministers and staff.

"Doing so [sex with staff] will constitute a breach of the standards," said Mr Turnbull about the new code.

"It is about time that this change was made. Probably should have been made a long time ago. And this is the standard that I will hold from this day forth all of my ministers to.

"It is not acceptable for a minister to have a sexual relationship with somebody who works for them. It is a very bad workplace practice. And everybody knows that no good comes of it."

When asked if Mr Joyce's breach of the code would have seen him out the door, the PM responded: "If he did what he did last year tomorrow, or today, he would be in breach of the code."

What do you think of the ban? Is it enough for the public to overlook Mr Joyce's actions? Or is he 'done'?

A FRESH push to oust Barnaby Joyce as Nationals leader erupted after the Deputy PM’s extraordinary attack against Malcolm Turnbull yesterday, sources told The Australian.

Nationals MPs told The Australian Mr Joyce’s position was “untenable” and demanded he step down before the next party room meeting on Monday or face a leadership spill, after a public war of words between Mr Joyce and Mr Turnbull.

Mr Joyce’s colleagues said his scathing rebuke of Mr Turnbull threatened to undermine the governing coalition between the Nationals and the Liberals.

One Nationals MP said: “The right action to take is for the Deputy Prime Minister to stand down. The government will be paralysed.”

Interesting that "devout" Christians, as most politicians claim to be, need to be forced to obey the 7th commandment.

yep Kiah, there seems to be no angels in P.House.

If Barnaby goes, then Shorten should also.

’I’m glad I was dumped as PM’

AFTER 25 years of bitter snipes at the man who knifed him, Bob Hawke has revealed he was secretly pleased to be dumped as prime minister - because it let him marry his mistress.

So much for Bob Hawke

Oh dear, Hawkey drank beer as well. Cant wait to hear from the experts on morality with this one? Where are you Thea, PlanB and the rest of the moral finger waivers?? :)

I worry that we may see the end of the larrikin, beer drinking, womanising Aussie male. We need to hang on to some traditions?

These days whenever I see a picture of Bob Hawke I find myself thinking about Les Patterson.  It's quite disturbing.

What about seat-sniffing ... like Troy Buswell, ex Liberal Member for WA ...

that is just plain wrong,   on so many levels,    wonder what he does for kicks?      the mind boggles,

Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison need to be very careful. If they go too hard on Barnaby, rather than winning the women's vote they could lose some votes.

Jim Cairns and Junie Morosi's affair contributed to the downfall of the Whitlam government.

I think I recall Junie Morosi quoted in the media 'leave Barnaby alone.'

This whole saga has been very interesting and has confirmed (at least to me) something that I have always believed.  When we make judgments about other people's behaviour we are more forgiving of those we like, than those we don't.  It's really as simple as that, politics aside.

Some will say they don't make judgments, but I think we do, even if it's subconciously, that's human nature.  Even if people choose not to comment, doesn't mean they don't have an opinion and an opinion is a judgment favourable or not.

Leonie, I'm not disagreeing with you. What about those who simply have no stand either way on the morality of the issue, but at the same time, believe that if there has been a crime committed the punishment is too harsh. I've worked in organisations where sexual activity has been rampant, I've also worked in teams where it was an unwritten law that we were all brothers and sisters.  The differences vary depending on the culture of the organisation. I can understand Turnbull's need to change the culture if there have been too many bare bottoms in the office so to speak. What really matters is that undue influence is not being used for gain either by subordinates or their managers, or that sexual harassment is not part of the culture. The reality is that two consenting adults dont need to be treated like children and Turnbull should have not been so public with his new 'sex policy.'

finally a conservative sex scandal the Lefty hypocrites can circle jerk themselves into a lather about.

We all remember Hawke our PM with Blanch, Tony Bourke, Greg Combet ,Evans  all who loved to use the public purse to futher their sexual desires.

And Shorten who is given an easy ride by his media comrades but still not wanted as PM

Hypocrisy is the first thing progressives are taught in school and the only subject they managed to master.

When a Labor minister does the same thing they want to make him Prime Minister?

"Hypocrisy is the first thing progressives are taught in school and the only subject they managed to master."

:) Brocky ... think I would extend that definition to pollies of all persuasions, various dictators and many religious sects/leaders as well.

I well remember the "rumour" doing the rounds some time back where a well known married pollie got his PA pregnant but she had an abortion.  No credible evidence could be obtained because both parties kept their mouths shut.

Same thing about a rape case too much time had gone by..

I guess Labor will be instituting the same no sex policies ?.???

Apparently if Shorten gets in the sex ban will be lifted.

Surely now is the time for the PM to announce a Royal Commission into bonking?

I've heard it mentioned that a political #metoo should get under way immediately.

Hi Frank, I have worked in similar enviroments to you, and still feel the same way.  Having no stand either way on the morality of a situation is really a kind of passive acceptance anyway, just my opinion of course.  I have actually found myself finding 'reasons' for the behaviour if the people involved were friends, which in at least one instance they were, while more or less sitting on the fence for other people who weren't close friends.

My ex-husband had a workplace affair that led to our divorce.  I bet you can guess which side of that fence I sat on.  lol.

As for your other point, not sure about that.  I guess rules are there for a reason, we might not always like them, but in the workplace we are made aware of them and I guess one could say, if you don't like the rules, go elsewhere. I've had more than one boss who has said that, and I find it hard to disagree with.

If a crime has been committed that's different, then usually it's out of the hands of the workplace (unless they choose not to report it), and the law will take care of it, and if the punishment is too hard, there is always the right of appeal.

Having said all that I think the new 'sex ban' is pretty silly.  Good luck with that one Malcolm.

Leonie, you make a very good point with your own experience. It is a personal issue and none of us can know the ins and outs of it all regardless of how empathetic we like to be. It's a no fault situation as far as I'm concerned with each case having it's own set of variables. I can recall years ago interviewing for a new secretary/PA. A very attractive lady. She was doing really well until she said, I will do anything to get this job, can we talk about it over dinner? It may have been a one off, I will never know, but I couldnt risk letting her loose in our organisation.

Malcolm Turnbull's public announcement of a sex ban as of 6pm 15th February is nothing more than a political stunt. He has obviously had harsh words with Barnaby and wants to distance himself.

Oh and to RnR - spot on!!

on the one hand, we live in the world’s most energy rich country but have the world’s most expensive energy and can’t keep the lights on.

On the other, we have a deputy PM in a relationship with a woman who was on his staff. Which do you think is more embarrassing? Which would the world be laughing at most?

When you put those two problems in the same post it would make anyone laugh. lol

If we could keep the lights on we may reduce the bonking?

One problem two laughs

thiis a rule you could never enforce,   men & women,  being what they are,   if they were attracted to someone,   and it was recipricated,   they would go for it,           hopefully, not to the extent that BARNABY did,    but  they were fools,    know the old saying,   its to high to eat grass,

Barnaby Joyce would still comfortably win New England if an election were held today, with a margin of about 13 per cent.

Polling by the Nationals in the seat conducted on Wednesday and Thursday last week found Mr Joyce had a primary vote of 52 per cent if he were running against former member Tony Windsor and that he would win by 63-37 on a two-party-preferred basis.

Hold the phone??!!! Didnt he win the Bi-election with 52% of the primary? Are they saying that he has suffered absolutely no loss of support from his electorate? Apart from a handful of preferences??

Would not be hard to win against Tony Windsor thought he had resigned some years back ???

He also has a positive rating as opposed to the negative rating of Shorten and Turnbull ..
