Power of a royal to crash a website

So you surely know that Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has arrived in Australia. Oh, yes, husband Prince Harry is here too. They’re here for the Invictus Games in Sydney, the sporting event Harry created for injured and sick armed services personnel.

But the real news yesterday – not discounting Monday’s Palace tweet that she was pregnant – was what she was wearing.

The classic-look shift dress by Australian designer Karen Gee received maximum media coverage. Did anything else happen in Australia on Tuesday? In case you missed it, the frock in question sells for $1800 and caused the Karen Gee website to crash. Be sure (to be read with tongue firmly in cheek) you won’t be buying one any time soon!

What a fillip on offer for Aussie designers though, with Meghan expected to wear a range of Australian creations during a week-long visit that will also take in Melbourne, Fraser Island and Dubbo.

Gee, a Sydney-based designer and mother of five, said she was “so proud, particularly because I am not a world-recognised brand”.

How does one get to be worn by Meghan? Ms Gee said she sent several pieces for consideration but had been bound by a confidentiality agreement about the detail.

We breathlessly await the dawning of upcoming days – and nights.

... saw the interview with Karen Gee....what an impressive amazing and "quiet achiever"!  Couldn't have happened to a nicer person!

Meghan looks gorgeous in almost anything she wears and I love that simple classic Karen Gee dress.  Such a boost for this designer and for Australia..I bet we’ll be seeing a lot of Karen Gee dresses at the Melbourne Cup next month!

This is one of the cutest moments of the couple’s walkabouts yesterday..Harry admiring Daphne Dunne’s “cool” shoes !

Daphne's cool shoes and cool hospital non-slip walking socks.  Good on you, Daphne, that must have been a big effort.

Top marks to Harry and Meghan, respecting the aged as they do is not so fashionable in Australia.

Megan's a lot like me. When you nhave a freat figure and good looks, doesnt matter what you wear, always looks amazing

Doubt it Duchess olbaid

Have just been reading this.

A new book claims Queen Elizabeth is bemused by Australia's attitude towards becoming a republic.

Queen Elizabeth believes Australia's "deathwatch" policy on her is untenable,  says a new book examining her reign.

Queen of the World, written by the British author and royal reporter Robert Hardman, says the Queen's view is that, if Australia wants to be a republic, it should "get on with it" and not wait for her death.

"That would be untenable for the Prince of Wales, untenable for the Queen and untenable for the country itself because obviously, they'd be looking at their watches waiting for her to pass away," Hardman writes, citing a palace official.

"The palace view was: 'You've got to name a date because we can't have this lingering 'deathwatch.' "

Political momentum for a republic has stalled ever since the failed 1999 referendum result and the ascendance of the younger royals, Princes William and Harry, and their families who are hugely popular and have modernised the image of the royal family.

"At Buckingham Palace ... there were no great celebrations," Hardman writes of the failed referendum.

"Some courtiers - and, it is said by some, the Duke of Edinburgh -wereincredulous and less than thrilled. The inevitable had not been avoided, merely deferred."

The revelation comes amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's tour of Australia that began with the newlyweds announcing their first pregnancy.

Former Labor prime minister Julia Gillard, arepublican, was the first Australian leader to suggest waiting for the 92-year old monarch to die before reconsidering a republic.

Malcolm Turnbull, who led the failedrepublicancampaign in 1999, adopted Ms Gillard's policy in office, describing himself as an "Elizabethan".

Polling shows support for Australia becoming a republic has stalled.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is not in favour ofchange.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has promised to hold a plebiscite in the next term of Parliament if he takes power at the next election. Mr Shorten wants to first ask people if they support the idea of Australia cutting its ties to the monarchy. If the answer was "yes" then another vote would be held to determine what kind of republic Australia would become

What is known with great certainty is that Bill Shorten is not seen as a suitable PM.

Yep, Harry's got himself a great girl, she even knows how to cook, always a plus in my book!

I think Australia should stay with the monachy until the appeal of the Royals begins to fade.

This could be next year or in ten years or more.

Then we could consider a republic.

Agreed.  I cannot think of one gain to the public from a move to a republic and the costs would be horrendous.  Government does not have any money of its own and that money for the republic must come from savings elsewhere and higher taxes.

Of course Bill Shorten wants a costly vote on a republic, but it isn't his money he is spending and there is no way that his salary and benefits would be negatively affected.

... gotta feel a bit sorry for poor ole' "Megs"  :-)    Fiji trip has not been that kind to her ....firstly there was the market fiasco with the unruly crowds and the heat .........and what apeared to be very little (if any) real security?

... tonight (Thurs.) on the news - there she was in a gorgeous bright red dress - but - the red "swing tag" (label) - was hanging down off the back of the dress below the hemline!! Swinging in full view of everyone!    I would have thought she had people who would organise her clothing etc. for her? Embarrassing to have that footage touted around the world!!

Surely "someone" would have noticed??  Obviously not ....  I felt so sorry for her ......

Yes Foxy so do I.  I bet Harry will have chewed the minders off a fair bit for letting Meghan down like that.

That Market is pretty scary we hurry passed it when we have walked from the ship to the centre of town, I don't like the look of some of the 'heavies' in that area at all.  I don't like Suva much at all frankly.

i saw the bit with her 'red tag'   agree,  my first thought was why her minders ,or SOMEONE wouldnt have noticed it,    dont think i would like to be in that market, either,   look like they would cut your throat for a dollar,   mean looking bunch,

About ninety percent of their trip was organised with great precision.

While the red tag episode was a bit silly, I don't think it was that important.
