Recall of dangerous cleaning products

Woolworths is recalling two of its products - the Essentials Domestic Cleaner Regular 1.25L and Essentials Domestic Cleaner Fresh 1.25L, both with use by dates up to and including June 2019.

These products were sold in Woolworths and Metro stores nationally from April 2016 to 18 July 2018.

The recall is due to a faulty child resistant cap, which could cause the product to leak. If the product leaks, it could pose a health risk to customers or damage property due to Essentials Domestic Cleaner being a poisonous substance.

Woolworths advises customers to wear gloves and dispose of the contents immediately. Customers can get a full refund for their purchase if they bring the rinsed-out bottle or a purchase receipt to any Woolworths supermarket or Metro store.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention Ben

I had a Domestos bottle split down the  side and went all over my cupboard and ruined one of the supports -- I have been onto Unilever and they are sending out a prepaid package to send the bottle back to them -- and also said a $10 voucher -- which will not pay for the damage to my cupboard

I think they are talking about the Homebrand version here, was renamed Essentials a while back. But I thank you for mentioning the incident with the Domestos cleaner, that is the one I am using also. Had a good look at the bottle. So far so good.

Jim,  I use it all the time as it is very strong -- it wasn't even on the join it was on the other side of the left of the label

Thanks PlanB - shall definitely look at that spot on the bottle, possibly before I buy the next one.

I have had the bottle awhile so it wasn't really new -- but there is no sign of other damage like a weak spot or such

Domestos is a just another household cleaning product which contains chlorine-based bleach, i.e. 100,000 ppm (10%) of the active component, available chlorine. Similar to products used in swimming pools.

Beware combining chlorine-based bleaches with other common household chemicals, such as ammonia. Combinations can produce toxic gases. Mixing these bleaches with an acid such as vinegar can liberate chlorine gas such as that used as poison gas in WWI.

I use bleach but always put the bottle in another chlorine-proof plastic container under the sink in case of leaks. Ditto when buying from supermarket. Dangerous stuff, don't want a bleached car interior or chlorine gas poisoning.

I don't understand why people buy this poison that pollutes the environment and are hormone disruptors. So toxic and dangerous you have to wear gloves, what is it doing in your home in the first place!

You are right Music,  I don't use it often but sometimes it is very handy
