Lest we forget

It is a crying shame that they do not learn!

Yes. Despite everyone saying they hate war, the stupid masses still tend to vote for war-mongering leaders.

RnR -  Whilst shopping this morning I reminded a friend that it is Rememberance Day and I hope the Centre will dim the lights and play Reveille at 11am. No such luck, everybody just kept on going about their business., 3 minutes is all it would have taken. Lest We Forget -  I'm afraid most have forgotten.

On the army service record of my father’s uncle is a hand written note that he died 18 April 1937.

He’d come back to Australia from the war in 1919, with what we would now call PTSD and, from being gassed, with poor lungs and, it appears, infertility. For many years he had trouble finding work.

In 1930 he disappeared.

The source for the note on his service record is unknown - probably in papers long destroyed. A family story - supposition or half-truth? - says that he committed suicide while somewhere in the Riverina district of NSW. Perhaps he was never found, and declared legally dead on that date. But there should have been some record of that. Or perhaps he ended up being an unidentified male body - suspected but not proven to be Dad’s uncle. There should have been some record of that, too.

Rest in Peace, uncle, and all other victims of wars.

McGroger -  That is such a sad story and I'm afraid many others have suffered the same fate.  R.I.P.

Poppies to be projected on the Sydney Opera House to commemorate Remembrance Day

That looks spectacular.

Oh, the poppies look wonderful!  Do hope people pay respect to it.    My neighbour put out the gulag this morning and we remembered at 11.00 a.m

surely not hard for shopping centres to make an announcement!   They manage to do it for Jon essential things!

God bless all of them and all who have fallen in war. ( maybe I could be rude and be a bit selective there!).

why does the human race never learn?   Is it greed? For power? Megolamania?    Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

We are only on this earth for a short time- nothing lasts forever.   Look at the 1000 year Reich?  It's not there ( thank goodness) but look at the tragedy it caused and the human suffering that ensued.

all for one mans megolamania!   Trouble is- there are more of them!   LEST WE FORGET????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Woops, the flag didn't come up, sorry

RIP in Peace all those brave fallen ones, and often the worst was suffered by those who returned home and tried to live a normal life again, if they were healthy,

SAdly for what as our glasshouse Pollies have opened the gate to anyone and all, and how long will we be even able to live in a happy civilised society?

and shudder at the thought, but before this bid day is shot down as promoting was by those who supposedly practice Peace :)

Lest we forget

Your hatred of foreigners isn't promoting peace.

You are part of the problem.

Hi Barak.

Did I say anything about Foriegners?

But I guess you did.

This is such a sight Toot, that I am going to repeat it, thank you for posting it.

Five thousand and six hundred West Australians died for their country.. among them the much beloved grandfather of my children..My husband's father a proud West Australian never talked about his war days until the last year before his death.. and then...it was as if he had to get it all out...

I pay tribute to him and all the other brave men and women who died for what they believed in. It was wonderful to see how much they were remembered in Perth today and the Remembrance Service at the State War Memorial was very touching..

Yes Thea, if those lads had only known what was in store for them. My wife and I both lost family members. So I feel sad and at the same time honoured. Will the world ever learn? I don't think so -

You're so right Reagan...guess I do feel a bit down today....not only because of the sadness of remembrance but also the election result in America...which of course can adversely affect so many...let's hope it turns out reasonably well...

Hope you have a lovely weekend..we're off early tomorrow to the farm which always serves as a tonic...the weather is going to be fantastic at the weekend...so some long bushwalks will do the trick and who knows I may even catch a glimpse of my favourite bird...lol..

Those poor folk who died in the First World War were sucked in to glorification of Empire. Their lives were then sacrificed in leading front lines in combat in which they did not stand a chance of survival. Glory was theirs and so we glory them but in reality they were sacrificial lambs to slaughter.  Aussie men were expendable when fighting for mother England. Yes we should never forget. We should never forget the truth!

Yes, the British generals regarded the colonials as far more expendable than their own men.

And now we glorify military failures.

There is a need to put you right on this comment Barak :" and now we glorify military failures."

No one is glorifying war, now where did you go wrong in your understanding of that???

The sentiment here is to honour those who fought and died in the war, any war. It is to remind their families and especially the mothers, fathers and children and grandchildren that some of us have not forgotten.

There seems to be no end to your distasteful comments.

Lines like Thea's "six hundred West Australians died for their country" bother me.

They did nothing of the sort. They went for an adventure, and for Empire, not Australia. It wasn't Australia's war.

It turned out to be horrible. They did their best.

But it seems a majority of the battles we commemmorate were failures. Gallipoli is the most obvious. Fromelles was another.

Maybe  a change of glasses? Thea said 5,600 West Australians died for their country. That is what many of them wanted to do, rightly or wrongly. Why it should "bother" you is beyond me, if you served in any conflict, then it might have a bearing. As I said before "no end to your distasteful comments."

No doubt  you will have to have the last word with another distasteful comment, but I am not interested and will not be replying. Might be a good idea for you to start a thread on war.

Precisely what have I said that was disrespectul?

If somebody has to explain that to you, then you really have a problem.

OK. I'll do it again.

Now, what did I do wrong again?

Tell me who dropped you on the head as a babe and I'll tell them off.

Ray - I hate war. People here started to say they never wanted it to happen again. Nor do I. Everything I said was said with that goal. How is that disrespectful?

I know I didn't follow the traditional script for these events, but if we keep saying the same things about wars, war will continue to happen.

I said nothing negative about Australia's servicemen.

Listen sunshine, you're interrupting my Cayman Islands holiday. Keep to the topic and you'll be ok.

Btw, have a feel on the left hand side of your noggin  if there is a lump, that's where you were dropped hahaha. I know a good vet if you're interested!

Shame cos, the left is logic and so you have a problemo!

I am not the topic.

Take no notice Thea, his insensitivity knows no bounds.

Who?

Can we not have one post given to total respect without all the unnecessary comments.?

Brave men died and " WE REMEMBER THEM"..

God bless them all.
