Rubbish recyle

A woman removes a rubbish bin from a street curb in Brisbane

Not sure what is going to happen around here now as our rubbish tip is nearly full.  But with no recyling it makes me wonder if we are in a bind with land fill.

Recycling will be dumped by councils nationwide as costs blow out, government association says

Ipswich City Council in Queensland yesterday said it had become too costly for the city to recycle, so from now everything placed in yellow bins would go straight to landfill.

What a debacle and how disheartening.

Why? China has banned a range of imported recyclable rubbish. On January 1, China stopped accepting 24 categories of solid waste, disrupting the export of more than 600,000 tonnes of material out of Australia each year.

Other councils disagree. Toowoomba Regional Councillor Nancy Sommerfield said Australia should develop its own industries. "We used to have a recycling industry and it wasn't until China stepped into the market that those industries faded away — and we need now to step back up to the plate and develop our own industries," she said.

Cairns Regional Council said it had no intention of following Ipswich's lead in sending its recycling to landfill. Mayor Bob Manning said the council had stockpiled about 100 tonnes of lightweight plastic since January after China stopped receiving foreign waste. He said the council could continue doing so for the foreseeable future. "We will not turn to landfill for plastics and materials like that. This council has moved away from that, and we're not going to impose a cost on our ratepayers."

Hope it’s a storm in a recyclable teacup, so to speak.

"Scientists have created a substance capable of “eating” plastic that could help tackle the world’s pollution problem.

The substance is based on an enzyme – a “biological catalyst” – first produced by bacteria living in a Japanese recycling centre that researchers suggested had evolved it in order to eat plastic."

I would be a bit apprehensive it this was allowed out what else does it eat?

Celia has a point - might not be able to leave my shoes outside, quite a bit of plastic in modern footwear.

The whole problem is we seem to trust and rely on China too darn much --and down the line it is going to cause even MORE trouble --  we import from them -- sell our land to them -- and relied on them to do the rubbish thing -- now they are exporting from THEIR farms --stopped taking OUR rubbish and will very soon walk in and take over like they have in places in Africa and many other places around the world -- little by little now they want the Pacific islands, and it WILL happen here.

We should have paddled our own canoe and kept our OWN land and produced OUR OWN food as China is exporting the good food and selling up the crook stuff --that they grow in contaminated areas -- but people buy it without a 2nd thought

Very true Plan B.

I don't think the youth of today are passionate about their country or it's future.

Look at the Navy China has, probably care of all the iron ore we have shipped to them.

Yes PlanB, we buy anything, as long as it's cheap. Look at the seafood in the super markets in the freezer section - China, Viet Nam, Malaysia and Thailand. And our

good stuff is exported to exactly those places. All it takes for us to be prepared to pay a bit more for our food and buy local.

What has happened to our country of innovation and development?  We should have been developing our own means of dealing with recyclables, instead of taking the easy way out and exporting it all to China.  Shame on the powers-that-be for not doing their job!  No one is prepared to make difficult decisions.  It's too easy to sit back and enjoy our own little bubble, until it is all far too late.

It is often a problem when one generalises or extrapolates. My understanding is that in Ipswich, about 50% of the ”recycling” is actually rubbish, whilst in Brisbane, as well as other Queensland cities, it is as low as 7%. So Ipswich residents lack of discipline will cost them. Kama.

They can turn plastic into pellets that can be used to resurface roads.

It is more durable and cheaper than using tarmacadam - plus it would create jobs if done on a large scale.

We should be the lucky country. We have sun & wind for electricity, we have brilliant minds thinking of ways to re-use plastic, plenty of land to bury what can't be used in some way - yet. But do we use these? No, we have idiotic governments making idiotic decisions with the almighty $ in their heads. Charity begins at home I was told as I was growing up. With all the land we have why do we have homelessness? If we didn't let foreigners (not living here) buy our housing & leave it empty there would be more affordable housing for Australians. Time to find & use our own fuel or develop further the hybrid cars. I could go on but we all know what is happening. It appears to be a down hill slide to me.

If we ALL don't stand up and be counted for what we believe in the Government will get away with what they want and what makes THEM plenty of $$$$$  We should also REFUSE to buy anything imported and buy only Aussie-owned and grown,  because down the track -- and not far off now --- we will be at the mercy of the others

The Ipswich City Council, west of Brisbane, says it intends to reverse its decision to send recycling to landfill. See here.

Well, they’re you go … sorry I mentioned it now.

Another 24-hour ‘storm-in-a-teacup’ sensation apparently.

.... Just proves you can never trust what a  a Politician says

anyone who buys food [fresh, esp]    that comes from china is taking there life in there hands,  I,MP,      the fish they send here is caught in the MEEKONG RIVER,    and after seeing pictures of that,     put me off buying chinese forever,    the markets have plenty of our own FRESH FISH,      must admit my shopping now takes twice as long,  as i look at labels,   something i never used to do,     it i surprising just WHAT is on our shelves,     name a country,  we have goods from there,     why do we have oranges from california when our own farmers are ploughing the fruit back into the ground?     we have so much good food ,  grown and harvested here we shouldnt need all this crap,      frozen bread from DUBLIN,   IRELAND,  !    WHOS BRIGHT IDEA WAS THAT,    but coles sell it,     disgusting,

Yes Cats -- it sure is an eye opener when you do read the labels -- and also be very aware that NZ can IMPORT from ANYWHERE and relabel it as if it was from NZ --   I never buy anything from NZ anymore --

Anything bought from anywhere other than Aussie owned AND grown is not on for me  -- if we do not support OUR farmers it will be the likes of Chinese poison that is only available

HI PLAN B,    like you,  i avoid all new zealand stuff to,    as i was told they take a lot of the chinese fish and label it as there own,     i am lucky in that way,   and a bit spoilt,   as i have the market,   and the shop i go to for my fish has won the award 4 years in a row for fresh fish,    but it has got so that you have to look at everything,   and what annoys me to hell, is tinned fruit,     you have to search high and low or aussie fruit,    stacks from china,  africa,    then tucked away in a corner you find aussie fruit,       not good enough,
