Scam warning

I would like to share a recent experience that almost cost me dearly. My partner and I advertised a campervan for sale, with registration and RWC.  A young, single mother living on Centrelink bought it, for $8,500 (in cash).  After a couple of days, she sent me a message saying she had another Roadworthy done on the vehicle and some things were not right - seatbelts and rear seats had no compliance certificates, the tyres had plenty of tread but were badly perished, the tow bar was rusty and welded to the body of the van.  I explained to her that we had bought the van 3 years earlier with a RWC from RACV and we had never used the towbar or rear seats, but if she was unhappay with it, bring it back and we would refund her money.  She said no, but wanted it fixed, we said OK, take it back to the garage that did the RW and we would have him fix it. No, she didn't trust him.  From then on she texted me several time a day with everything she could think of that was wrong, until it became harrassment.  She was offered a refund on at least 3 occassions but refused.  Then it came down to taking us to court for compensation so I told her to go ahead. Two weeks and many emails and texts later I had enough and told her to stop calling, texting or emailing me, so she called me and I hung up on her.  I went to the police explaining what was happening and told them I believed she was trying to extort money from us.  They were really nice but couldn't do anything as it's a civil matter, but said if she persisted in harrassing us, I could take out a restraining order against her.  Then she suddenly decided to "return the van to us for a refund, tear up the papers and no one would be disadvantaged".

I was ready to give in to this as I was so sick of her but my partner refused.  He took the transfer papers to VicRoads to find out what the problem with the roadworthy was but they couldn't tell him as the vehicle was NO LONGER REGISTERED IN HIS NAME.  I called the policeman who I had seen earlier and he confirmed - she had transferred the reistration into her name.

The bottom line is - she would bring the campervan back to us, get a full refund (in cash) then go home and REPORT IT STOLEN!!

Even when I told her we knew what was going on, she still insisted it was not in her name.  I told her both Vicroads and the Police had confirmed it but she then accused them of lying!!

Just be very careful who you have dealings with.  If it was my decision I would have fallen for her lies and we would now be facing criminal charges.
