School replaces detention with meditation

An American primary school has replaced traditional detention with meditation.

Robert W. Coleman Elementary in Baltimore works with a local non-for-profit called Holistic Life Foundation (HLFINC) which seeks to "nurture the wellness of children and adults in underserved communities".

The school's detention room has been replaced by a brightly coloured 'Mindful Moment Room', a space where misbehaving kids are sent to calm themselves with meditation and breathing exercises.

Children suffering from anxiety, headaches, stress and other ailments are also able to visit the room for sessions with the mindfulness instructors.

The program is having a fantastic impact on schools, with increased attendance rates and decreased suspension rates.

Do you think meditation is a better solution than detention? If you currently meditate, would you have been grateful for being introduced to the practice at a younger age?

Great, full approval. Meditation sure works for our support groups for kids at my Church.

Great going Banjo.

Meditation is fast becoming a thing in some primary schools in Italy.

It could help.

How can Australian government schools access such a resource?

Add it to the safe schools program along with teaching students about  gay relationships

That doesn't answer my question.

The way to hand over your mind to demons. It will go with the Unsafe, Safe schools where boys will be turned into sodomites for the pleasure of wicked paedophiles.

Which school program is it that eliminates rational thought?

all public school programs

left wing nonsense

So true. You should the left wing nonsense in my Maths classes!

Of course, it was a bigger problem when I used it in Catholic and private schools.

Time to roll back the left wing culture that has colonised our classrooms

“The left planted its flag atop the educational establishment long ago. If we are to hope for better schools and smarter kids, that dominance must be overturned,” Dr Kevin Donnelly writes at Quadrant Online.

“Forget the cultural-left bias and PC group mentality of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, when it comes to a pervasive ideological commitment to the left nothing beats Australia’s education establishment.”

Dr Donnelly says the arrival of the Abbott Government immediately started the alarm bells ringing inside the system.

“There is nothing surprising or new about such outbursts. Australia’s educationalists, along with those in other English-speaking nations, embarked on the cultural left’s long march through schools and universities during the late 60s and early 70s.

“This was a time of the cultural revolution epitomised by Vietnam moratoriums, flower power, sexual liberation and attacks on established authorities represented by the universities, the Church and the nuclear family,” he writes.

The Vietnam protesters were right.

Hey - just ask Banjo!   -  "Churchy dude"  that knows everything (about nothing!) lol lol lol

Good idea! Better than asking the YLC troll with the red fur

Thanks Ray, best thing is ignore the trouble maker who should be doing some volunteer work for her community instead knocking others who do.

Students as young as five are doing daily meditation in class as the mindfulness movement sweeps Victorian schools.

Wellbeing workers are becoming more common as schools integrate mental health into learning to improve student wellbeing, grades and social skills.

Principals say meditation is more important than ever as children's minds become crowded by technology.

We're turning our  kids into a bunch of pansies

Why do you want to turn your kids into a bunch of pansies??? Flower power revival??

Swooping into YLC with more of your "bird crap" Ray???   Such a TROLL!  UGH

YOU...are the only "troll" on the forum..

LOL LOL LOL    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO U R   LOL LOL LOL

ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh

And this is supposed to be a forum for literate seniors??

Most of you are missing the point. As any classroom teacher will tell you when a child reaches his/her limit of self control they erupt and the whole class suffers. Meditation, time out, old fashioned "kindly leave the room" gives the child space to calm down and hopefully think about their actions and why they are in trouble.A calm one-on-one followup conversation asking the child to explain why they erupted and allows perceived misconceptions to be examined. Asking why often offers a clear window into motivation for all parties. It just takes time.

Some wise thoughts there.

Spot on fish head ...

My nephew was diagnosed with Autism when he was about 3. Lucky he had early intervention and attended a special school for therapy. When he had some very bad outbursts he was encouraged to spend time in a quiet place to calm him down. His Mother bought a child's tent from Ikea and set it up in his bedroom. When he got very  bad with the tantrums she would order him to his "Special Place" and come come out when he calmed down. It worked a treat and now he is 12 years old and doing very well at school. Meditation classes would be a great idea for all children especially the older ones as they are obsessed with their electronic gadgets and are too hyped up.

Well said Hola, agree.

Thanks. Nice to know 40 years of teaching was not wasted.

It shows.

My grandchildren are an energetic, full on bunch of kids, and after a full day of racing around the park, and pounding the beach, I often bring them home, give them a shower ,lay them on the carpet with a pillow and put on my meditation music..

It gives them time to have a well earned rest and all is calm in time for dinner...

If it works for them I have no doubt it will be a great idea for school children, as the brain needs a break too..

Bravo Cranky, agree wholeheartedly :)

Gawd - imagine having you as a Grandparent? Meditation music? lol lol lol  Hilarious!     Poor things - my heart goes out to them!  :(

It's very clear troll you have no grandchildren...so how would you know how to treat them???

Do you have to have a licence for your nastiness foxy..?

SOUNDS like a good idea,    having 'worked ' with children , in the day care center,    i have seen how easy some very children can cause a ruckus among a group,    even at that young age,    every afternoon the kids were put down to rest for an hour,     the staff always put on music for them,   and it was surprising the diffence it made,    they would get up with a peaceful attitude ,   and the afternoon uaually ran smoothly,

I prefer to wear them out to dead tired and then rest them because they only giggle and whisper otherwise.

ha ha CAMPBELL,    have known that to work to,   esp with my own,    let em run until they drop,   sometimes its the only way,

Is that what you do with your hubby so he doesn't bother you in bed ?

that and other things CARLOS,    you would be surprised what happens in my house,   lol, lol,
