Self medicating

Naive as it may be seen I thought the term 'self medicating' involved the treatment of health issues by purchasing over-the-counter remedies from the supermarket or local chemist until I read this!!

"Mr ...... allegedly returned a breath test reading of 0.182 at the police station and suffers from manic depression. The court heard he had not been taking his prescribed medication for a month and was self medicating with ice and alcohol."

Well there you go ... brings a whole new meaning to the term 'self medication'.

Full story here.

Suppose it also livens up the concept of YourLifeChoices and tax refund angst.

Another excellent thread, yes self medicating is a huge problem and I've seen the results of many  of those cases in  my gym. Fortunately  if they  have caring people around them, who can recognise the signs of self medication, those people can be helped before they kill themselves or someone else.

Hopefully this thread won't be messed up but will bring forward some good and informative conversation, possibly with the help of the Mod.

Reagan -  What I am concerned about is, one of my friends  is on strong medication for various complaints. Each box says," Do Not Drink Alcohol whilst on this Medication" I have told him to be very careful mixing the both together but he seems to be in denial. He has already lost his licence with "High Range" alcohol, so how can we convince him to cut out the demon drink?

Hi Hola, that's a hard one. I know when my father in law developed macular degeneration, we had to hide the car keys. Eventually,we sold his car and he was so darn depressed. Anyway we got over that by introducing new things into his life. He's ok now. He refused to speak to us for a while, but when we told him he could kill someone, that seemed to sink in.

With your friend, if he lives alone,it's more difficult to watch his movements. Could be his doctor needs to be told and he could speak to your friend. Has he any relatives you can speak to, but then there is a chance he might not like that and a friendship might be threatened. As I say, a hard one Hola, wish I could be more helpful.

Reagan - Thanks for your information. My friend lives at home with his invalid wife and does everything, shopping, washing, and gardening. He is now retired and I think what he misses most is male companionship. That is why he goes to the pub all the time. I try to talk to him, and his wife is no support. I only hope he does not take ill as they have nobody to help them.

Just had a thought Hola, perhaps someone could suggest him joining a men's shed if there's one in his area. Might help to get him away from the pub scene and in touch with more male companionship. Here's a link if it helps:

Sure must have had a good lawyer

Self medicating with ice and alcohol sure gives "Self Medication" a different definition.

Reagan - You're such a darling, thanks for the information. I'll give him the list and then it's up to him, as the old saying goes "You can lead a horse to water but..........".

:) Thank you to the moderator for the 'steamed up' pic.

The self-medicating bloke in the original story was 'steamed up' because he had paid $20,000 in tax and didn't get a refund according to the article, so he rammed his truck into the nearest government building ... the local police station !! Vehicle looked like a write-off, as did the front of the building.

Guess he'll be 'taking advantage of the taxpayer' for quite a while now.

he is lucky to b alive
