Selfies linked to rising narcissism

A new study has established that excessive use of social media, in particular the posting of images and selfies, is associated with a subsequent increase in narcissism.

Narcissism is a personality characteristic that can involve grandiose exhibitionism, beliefs relating to entitlement, and exploiting others.

Those who used social media excessively, through visual postings, displayed an average 25 per cent increase in such narcissistic traits over the four months of the study.

This increase took many of these participants above the clinical cut-off for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, according to the measurement scale used.

Professor Phil Reed from the Department of Psychology at Swansea University, who led the study, said: “There have been suggestions of links between narcissism and the use of visual postings on social media, such as Facebook, but, until this study, it was not known if narcissists use this form of social media more, or whether using such platforms is associated with the subsequent growth in narcissism.

“The results of this study suggest that both occur, but show that posting selfies can increase narcissism.”

How often do you post selfies to social media? Do you follow anyone on social media who you consider to be narcissistic?

Gee I have never ever taken a selfie ever

I think you need a selfie stick

Wonder if Prof Phil is a narcissist.

Not all the time the only one I have is one my elder son took of us both on last Mothers Day. Came out rather good as a matter of fact I was rather surprised!  LOL   It was taken in our kitchen.

The afternoon sun was full in our faces and I didn't think it would be much good but it was very good. Now I know how to hid my wrinkles!  LOL

I took one by mistake once when learning my new mobile phone.

I got such a fright I haven't taken one since. lol

HAHA like it!

Yeah I reckon it would be scary -- I once saw a vision of me on my skype --- that was scary!

I used to be narcissitic!. Now I just love nyself!

I never post selfies of myself..I like to be kind to my readers!

Wonder if this woman fell off the edge!

Agree!  It's very much the ME generation!!!  Nearly ran over two high school students a few weeks ago!  Eyes on their phones and walked straight out in front of me.  Luckily a third (with no phone) yelled a warning to them!!

I love myself so much, I take selfies all the time, even got myself a selfie stick and get very annoyed when anyone wants to be in my picture LOL

Don't you know if you don't take selfies and post on social media, you weren't there and it didn't happen?

I've never done anything and never been anywhere....!!! :-()

Well I am not on social media either and have never taken a selfie -- so maybe the world will stop   ; ))

I know several people who just seem to post selfies of them selves constantly which is quite boring (in my opinion)but I guess they are not hurting anyone

I thought we all knew this already, most of us growing up would think you were full of yourself if you did anything remotely like this, now sadly it is becoming the norm, I feel sorry for the kids who have fallen in the trap of the telcos.  I went to a quiet beach recently and saw two young girls prancing around taking photos of themselves, changing clothes and bikinis etc. I was shocked at the behaviour and thought how vunerable they would be if the wrong person/people were to go to this isolated beach.
