Senator David Leyonhjelm calls to restrict pension, says being poor 'nothing to be proud of'

Updated Tue at 12:29pm

Crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm says people who receive pension payments should not be proud because it shows they are poor.

The Government has restricted access to the aged pension for 300,000 older Australians as part of a tightening of the assets test which began yesterday.

But Liberal Democratic senator Leyonhjelm said the restrictions did not go far enough.

"Taking the pension shouldn't be something you aspire to, it should be something you try to avoid because it signifies you're in a low income group — in other words you're poor, or close to poor," he told the ABC.

The crossbench senator wants the payment to be viewed as welfare — not an entitlement for taxpayers once they reach a certain age.

"We really have to get over this idea that you don't have to save for your own retirement and your own old age," he said.

He continued his calls for the family home to form part of the assets test for pensions.

The Government has been defending its changes to the pension during the summer holidays, as Labor ramped up their calls to have it reversed.

Senator Leyonhjelm said Australians should "reinforce the notion" that "when you retire you will only receive the pension if you're poor and it's nothing to be proud of".

We will not forget

I spoke to some friends the other week -- they are Liberal voters and they are very religious people and their answer to my questions -- what do you think of -- Morrison/Abbott etc  -- they said oh well they ARE Christens  -- I replied -

Tell me this then IF Jesus was around today and was in Government what side would he take do you think?          meaning that IMO Jesus would be more caring --  ie left wing politician not a hard right noncaring person -- -- they had NO answer to that.

I do find it strange that all these so-called "Christens"  have no empathy at all

Well, Senator, just a reminder that taxes we pay pays your salary and you are a scrounger

David Leyonhjelm has announced he will quit federal politics so he can contest the New South Wales state election.

Key pointsSenator Leyonhjelm needs 4.5 per cent of the vote to be elected to the NSW Legislative CouncilHe plans to campaign for the legalisation of recreational cannabis and pill testingHe will be competing with One Nation and other conservative minor parties

Senator Leyonhjelm is expected to resign as early as February 28 and will attempt to win a seat in the NSW Upper House in March.

He was first elected to the Senate in 2013 and was re-elected in 2016.

Speaking to Sky News this evening, Senator Leyonhjelm said he is making the switch because he wants to work on "nanny-state issues".

He sure seems to be a rude SOB as well

Do not vote for this dispicable piece of excrement, David Leyonhjelm.

He is cunning, insulting, smug & a "slut shamer" - the opposite of what a political representative should be. We don't want politicians with this attitude. He is opinionated & he doesn't listen to anyone.

When he leaves Federal politics, he'll earn a ridiculously huge pension with benefits for life, regardless of what other job he earns. If he becomes a NSW Senator, will he also get a NSW Pension on top? Just another reason to get rid of this parasite at the next election.

Talk about unrepresentative scum!!!

Well, he will claim a pension. Should he be ashamed. I think we should call on him to reject the parliamentary pension on the grounds that he is NOT poor, and therefore, under his own rules, not entitled to it.

yes, he should do what Senator Ted Mack did....he resigned a day before he was entitled to anything because he did not need the money.  He died last year.

Yes Mack was a good man --
