Set Top Box Query

About Seniors subscriber Ann has a query regarding Set Top Box's.
Can anybody help?

My daughter went to buy me an HD set top box for my birthday and was told by the salesperson that once it had been installed, I would no longer be able to record videos on my existing video recorder. In my lounge I have a video recorder and a DVD player. While in my bedroom I have a compo. I video a lot of programmes often on both machines at once while I watch a programme. The salesperson tried to sell my daughter a Tivo, but of course that was too expense. Some of my friends said that they did not think that was correct and that if you get a HD set top box you can still use your old video recorder. Please can you give me a correct answer?
Thanks - Ann

You would be OK for a while, but analogue TV will be phased out over the next few years. The only way then will be to have a high definition recorder, and I don't think they'll be making them as video machines, only disks or ones with hard drive memory. At the moment you could probably use a splitter on the aerial to connect both the set top box and the video recorder.

Yes you can use your Video recorder--however IF the set top box is tuned through the video--as mine is so I can watch videos--you will not be able to watch one channel and record on another--you will have t watch the TV through the AV channel.

I have one in the bedroom--in the lounge I have a Video and also a DVD recorder player--WONDERFUL--I can record on both the video and the recorder player--I am going to shout myself a recorder player for the bed room as well--you can also get ones now that record 2 programs while you watch another--I too like to record ALL my programs and watch at my own leisure.

BTW don't go Tivo as I am sure you ave to have a Broad band service for that--you can get other that don't have to have Broad band service. The recorder players are a bit more expensive but are really worth it--and you have the on screen program as well--it will tell you what is on for 7 days in advance--not need to buy a program again--it also tells you what the program is about.

My Recorder player has a hard drive and a disc drive--the hard drive is 160GB--you can get bigger ones now--I use DVD -RW in the disc drive as that way I can erase and use the disc again

I get the HD etc through my video--in the bedroom but I did have the man put up a new aerial for the Digital TV

I hope this has helped?
