SHROVE TUESDAY TOMORROW

SHROVE TUESDAY OR PANCAKE DAY HISTORY.

By , Contributing Writer

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent - the 40 days leading up to Easter - was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were "shriven" (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2016 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 9th February.

Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredient

NEED A NEW RECIPE  ?? TRY THIS ONE.

Banana Bread Pancakes with Cream Cheese GlazeIngredients - Pancakes
2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

3/4 cup buttermilk

1/4 cup sour cream

3 Tbsp granulated sugar

3 Tbsp packed brown sugar

1 large egg1/2 tsp vanilla extract

4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

1 1/2 cups mashed overripe bananas (from about 3)

Glaze
113 grms cream cheese, softened

4 Tbsp butter, softened1

1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

6 Tbsp milk (more or less to reach desired consistency)

Directions

For the pancakes: In a large mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon
for 20 seconds. Make a well in center of mixture then set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl whisk together buttermilk, sour cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, mashed bananas, egg, vanilla and melted butter.

While whisking, pour buttermilk mixture into flour mixture then blend just until combined (batter will be slightly lumpy).

Butter griddle as necessary then pour a heaping 1/3 cup onto griddle and slightly spread outward into a round.

Cook until bottom is golden brown (a lot of bubbles won't really appear on surface so just keep an eye on the color on bottom) then flip and cook opposite side until golden brown.

Serve warm with cream cheese glaze.

For the glaze:In a mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer set on medium speed, blend together cream cheese
and butter until well combine and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Add in remaining ingredients and mix about 1 minute until well combined. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator.

Note

Preheat an electric griddle to 350 degrees (you could also make these on the stovetop using a non-stick pan).

That sounds great Sandi, but I am a plain jane, just pancakes, and lemon or golden syrup for me.

I have been years trying to perfect he pancake toss..this year I will nail it !!! Lol

The action is all in the wrist Cranky.  Start off with smaller ones and you will get it in no time.   You will wonder why you didn't get it sooner.

:) Good luck with the pancake toss Cranky. Maybe you could get lessons from Dominic.

Highest pancake toss
The highest pancake toss measured 9.47 m and was achieved by Dominic Cuzzacrea (USA) at Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, New York, USA, on 13 November 2010. Dominic beat his own previous record by 30 cm.

Sandi -  That sounds scrummy. I had the misfortune to go to Pancakes on the Rocks near my home. I only wanted one without all the trimmings. The girl said I could have Whipped Butter instead. I said okay and waited for it to be served. Well one pancake arrived, the size of a dinner plate with a blob of whipped butter the size of a golf ball.  The pancake was not cooked in the middle and I had a scraping of the butter. What a disgusting meal. When we were kids Mum used to make Piklets, (I prefer them to pancakes). She used to put on them sugar and fresh lemon juice. Heaven.

Make your own Hola, with your culinary expertise you could probably teach the pancake makers how to cook pancakes..

and you can have all the blobs of whipped butter you like..lolol.

Cranky -  As there is only me at home now I never make them.  If Reagan is watching, no , I will not be making any, because if I do, I will eat the lot.

I'm in. Still use my old Commonsense Cookery Book recipe (from school) ... YUMMO!!

Funny about that RnR.  I still have my Commonsense one from School too.  It's a bit battered now though and falling to pieces.

My favourite recipe is one made with Ricotta Cheese.  Makes a lovely fluffy pancake.

I love those plain old home style cook books...

I have a plain old home style stomach, ...lol

My oldest one is the CWA edition , I bought at a school fete in 1969....:)

Just dug out my old Commonsense Cookery Book (1960 reprint) and its pancake recipe (so simple).

Used that recipe to make ‘pancake art’ for my grandkids a while back … superhero pancakes, e.g. Spiderman.

Now that's what I call a pancake !!

Largest pancake

The largest pancake was created in Rochdale, Manchester, UK in 1994, by the Co-Operative Union, Ltd. Measuring 15.01 m in diameter and 2.5 cm thick, the pancake weighed 3 tonnes (6,614 lb), and took more than just a frying pan to flip over!
