Slow cooker v pressure cooker?

I have never used either of these

I can remember my Mother using a pressure cooker and it often blowing up.

Please tell me of your knowledge of these, thanks

Maxim 6.5L Stainless Steel Slow Cooker (NSC-650)Cook all your meals with this one appliance.$49+ Delivery from Kogan On eBay they are about $55 but free postage

Do slow cookers do as good a job in tenderising the cheaper cuts

And I suppose they consume more power due to it having to be on for ages

Slow cookers are very cheap to run.   Hell of a lot cheaper than using the oven.

It is the cheapest appliance I know of to run.

Raphael, they are very good at cooking the meat.  If you slow cook in an oven it takes nearly as long and it must cost more to run an oven than a slow cooker.

I did 4 enormous Lamb Shanks recently and it took about 2 hours on High and then turned it down to low for a couple of hours.  I think some of the times they put are way longer than you need, but it would vary with different cookers.  I only have Low or High on mine, plus a keep warm button.

I did brown the Shanks before I put them in the cooker and warmed the tomato puree/stock.  If you warm them up it takes less time for the cooker as I find it takes a long time to get the stock warmed up to start cooking.

Thanks ladies - love lamb shank

think i'll go out and buy me a slow cooker :)

Reading the instructions is a MUST when you buy anything in the appliance line.

The problem arises when it is made in China and you get a Chinese translation with it ???

men dont need to read instructions

some are quite amusing Abby lol

Ralphael, if I had not read the instrucions with my new scanpan I would have done two things wrong.  One was never to use spray on oil;  I would have done this if I had not read the instructions and was also  warned by Sandi not to do so.

My hubby always says to me "read the instructions" and I follow his advice.

well i never use spray oil - rather brush grapeseed oil or olive oil.

so my scanpans look brand new still - 4 years old

glad you listen to hubby - you read so he doesnt have to :)

Unused saucepans always look new

.... whether they are 4 or 40 years old

shame you'll never know what gourmet cooking looks and tastes like

Med do not read the instruction -- but they really need to -- it would stop them stuffing up so many things  ;)

If anyone wants to know how stupid men can be go to the Darwin Awards (the majority are men)....  Many featured are no longer on this earth due to their stupidity (and not reading instructions).

Here is one:

"(11 December 2016, England) Drop an iPhone into your bath water, no biggie, all you get is a nasty repair bill. But drop a charging iPhone into your bathwater...and suddenly coroners are demanding warning labels.

It is with chagrin that this writer, known to bathe while poking at her laptop keyboard, shares news of the explicable demise of Richard Bull and his iPhone. Mr. Bull, 32, plugged his charger into an extension cord and rested the charger on his chest while using the phone in the tub. He received severe burns on his chest, arm, and hand when the charger touched the water in his West London home, which mattered little as he was already dead from heart failure.

Those of us who plug into plugged-in electronics must heed the coroner's warning and take a breather in the loo. The sparky mix of electricity and water is a fact known to all, yet the doctor who conducted the iNquest plans to send a stern note to Apple. Perhaps one more warning label will solve our problem?"

You ladies are a bunch on men hating feminists

if a man posted such nonesense about women , he'd be hung and quartered

There are currently only 29 examples of misandrist in the Oxford English Corpus, while misogynist appears more than 1,500 times

Yes - that's becuase women complain more than men about mistreatmemt

and it's usually a false accusation designed for personal benefit

ask ask Juliar

Facts speak for themselves:

"A 2014 study published in the British Medical Journal found that between 1995–2014 males represented 88.7% of Darwin Award winners "

Saw this great way of doing Baked Apples in a slow Cooker, one of our favourite desserts used Bramely Apples scored around the middle cored and stuffed with raisins and sugar - absolutely delicious this looks pretty good as a replacement.

If you took out the sugar it would also be healthy

It looks yummy!!

You can use honey instead of sugar Abby, the Bramley Apples we used in Britain were big, tart (as in taste) cooking apples that went fluffy when baked never seen them in Oz so use Big Granny Smiths instead and they don't need so much sweetening :)

Agree with you Viv

When I eat baked Granny Smith Apples ..especially my own from the garden I never add sweetening only Cinnamon and Spices

Still have my crock pot . Ceramic slow cooker . When I am home I use it often . Great for stews or curries .

Le Creuset

the best

that was the brand name of the cooking dishes i won,    i have never owned a pressure cooker,   but love the slow cooker,   used it today for corned silverside,     it cooks that lovely,  put the onions and carrots in with it,         can cook most things in the slow cooker,    its great for oxtail,    that takes hours to cook,     and the slow cooker is great,   put barley in and some dried soup mix,     brown the oxtail,   then put that in,     i always cook one when my eldest daughter comes down,   she loves it,  but doesnt really cook,      i make one for her to take home,    [she loves her mum],lol

ox tail - yuck

what next - tongue ???

and you complain about Mustuffa barbequing stray cats

Love Ox tail soup . I used to llike the Heinz but haven't seen it in years .

Love black pudding too .

I make a mean Cornish pasty too a family size one with meat in them .,

Not the veggie ones you get in Oz.,

used to be able to get the meat ones - but they tasted awful

HAVE never tasted black pudding BROCKY,    and have no intention of eating it,   but ox tail is ;ovely,  RAPHAEL,    ox tongue is nice to,    although i dont cook it,   but my mum used to,    i is a messy thing to cook,  as it takes hours to get tender,   [SLOW COOKER WOULD BE PERFECT,    but werent around in mums time,      WHEN its cooked you have to skin it, that is a chore and a half,    they are very thick,    and really what you get left with,   makes you wonder if it was worth it to begin with,      then you have to curl it round in a bowl,   and put a brick,  [or something very heavy,  on top,     then the juices come out and set,   so its in aspic,   i havent eaten it for years,    i dont know anyone who cooks it,   people go to the deli and buy ready cooked,    which is ok in an emergency,   but i dont like deli meat,      never know how long its been sitting in the glass window,   i suppose i make work for myself by cooking fresh every day,      but nothing like fresh food,     AS FOR MUSTAFFA,   and his cats,  i wouldnt mind him cooking them,  but he doesnt skin them properly.   and there is fur laying everwhere in the kitchen,    and between his teeth,    [which he NEVER cleans, ]   he is a really awful man,    would eat anything,     i have had to stop him bringing the camels toes home to cook,     the smell is revolting,    and MRS next door is getting suspisious,     i think she may be onto him,      if she is,    we are all in trouble,     I might have to lock him in the back shed again for awhile,     just till people forget he was here,      cant be to careful,

yes - he needs to be careful

try and control him Cats

bbq cat only once a week

i will send you 10 cartons of tinned Arabian cat and camel meat which he can have in between

show mustuffa how to use the microwave and all will be well

i couldnt trust him with the microwave,  raphie,   he cant count so wouldnt know what he is doing with it,,    he would blow us all up,  THANKS for the tins of cat and camel meat,    that will be great,    he will like that,

Oxtail is great.   Used to be cheap to buy...now it is "trendy" the price has skyrocketed and I dont see it that often on sale where I live.

Lamb neck chops are the tastiest for casseroles and were  $7.95 a kg at Coles (but have dropped 50 cents last time I shopped).   I usually buy mine at the Spud Shed here in WA and get for $5.95 a kg.

So many don't realise that the cheaper cuts are the nicest when slow cooked or pressure cooked.

I remember mutton used to be said to be the best taste -- told to me many decades ago from and Old Drover

MUTTON is a much sweeter meat,  PLAN B,     takes alittle more cooking,   but worth it,     OX TAIL,    the butcher used to give you ,  years ago,    for the dog,    [so people said,  lol,]    same as lambs fry.   and kidneys,       now you pay $5/6 for a bag of bones at the supermarket,   bones with not a skerick of meat on them,     NOTHING is given to you now,    thats if you can find a butcher,    they are a dying breed.    we dont have one in south melb any more,      have no idea where the nearest one would be,

Never ever see Mutton these days -- I must ask the Butcher next week

Like you Cats..I love ox tail..ox tongue and mutton..although I get ox tail..it's much harder to track down ox tongue  and mutton these  days..

When I can get ox tongue..I clean it first..then  boil..when it is tender then cut in slices and shallow fry..yum yum..

THEA,    i havent seen an ox tongue in shops for years,  and now no butchers around,  i doubt you would get one,   YES,   mum used to boil the tongue for hours,   thenpress it for cold meat,      never had it fried,     i love ox tail  but hubby wont eat,   and as its such a chore to cook,   i dont bother for myself,   but when my eldest daughter comes down,  i try and get 2/3 and cook them up,  so she can take some home,   and i get the rest,    our coles have been getting mutton in lately,   hadnt seen THAT for yonks either,     then they started to get it,    for some reason its dearer than lamb,    dont know why that should be,    but it is,    it was classed as the poor mans lamb,   but really it is nicer than lamb,   needs slow coking,

anyone looking for a slow cooker,    the post office is selling them for $50,     but if you look round can get them a bit cheaper.

The pressure cookers I have looked at all seem to have that non stick finish on them -- I would not buy that I want Stainless steel as the say that non stick can be dangerous if heated to a high temp

I have only had the inserts that are ceramic and very happy with them.

I would be happy with ceramic Radish

I had a pressure cooker and loved it until it melted and dripped molten metal all over my kitchen bench. Then I bought a slow cooker and loved that. But then I got an Ecopot (like a Dream Pot) and that was the absolute ultimate. Uses almost no power because you only cook for 20 minutes and then put the food in a sealed thermos where it cooks without power. It makes absolutely the best stews, casseroles, soups, etc. and unquestionably the best corned silverside I've ever made.

I now have two thermal cookers - a large Ecopot for home use and a smaller Dream Pot for camping. The Dream Pot is fabulous because I simmer the food for 20 minutes while we are having breakfast, then put it in the back of the car while we are driving or leave it sit in the van if we are camped and going out hiking or sightseeing for the day. When we are ready for dinner, it's done. So easy, and only 20 minutes of using the gas. And the results are always delicious. It's amazing the variety of things you can cook too. In the Ecopot I can cook a soup and main course or a main course and desert at the same time, all with virtually zero power - a great benefit if you are trying to reduce your energy consumption.

Slow cookers are wonderful, but thermal cooking is definitely the way of the future, especially given rising energy prices.

Gee to melt metal it would have had to gain some mighty heat Rainey,  how did it manage to do that?

I have decided to stick with my stainless steel boiler -- after looking at all the cookers in the shops AAND the price they want for them

I am of the same opinion PB

Why replace it whilst the old one is working .... the new ones often die when run out of warranty.

Yes Suze so many thing do these days it is done on purpose -- called

Planned obsolescence

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence

Thanks for the info re Planned Obsolescence

Some sellers offer additional warranty ... but for the cost and possible inconvenience I stick to the manufacturer's warranty.

6 months I bought a TODO kettle with 12 month warranty and it has died

I now have to package and post to the seller , the postage is another 25% on top of the initial cost of the TODO kettle.
