Something to think about ...

school kids sitting exams

A School Principal in Singapore sent this letter to parents before exams.

Dear Parents,

The exams of your children are to start soon. I know you are anxious for your child to do well. Please do remember amongst the students who will be sitting for the exams, there is a Artist, who doesn't need to understand Math. There is an entreprenaur who doesn't care about History or English Literature. There's a Musician, whose Chemistry marks won't matter. There's an Athlete whose physical fitness is more important than Physics.

If your child does get top marks, that's great, but if he or she doesn't, please don't take away their self confidence and dignity from them. Tell them it's ok, it's just an exam. They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them no matter what they score, you love them and will not judge them. Please do this and when you do watch your children conquer the world. One exam on a low mark won't take away their dreams and talent.

Please do not think Doctors and Engineers are the only happy people in the world.

Regards, The Principal.

How sensible.  Indeed some individuals are late bloomers, hence the success of mature aged students.

CindyLou - My son got a good pass in the HSC. He decided to try Accountancy at TAFE. He lasted 2 Terms. Absolutely hated it although he was good at Math. He loved Music and excelled in it with the HSC and heard about a position coming up with the Syd. Symphony Orch. We told him we would support him and to go for it. After 3 months of practise on his instrument he got the job. He was only  19 at the time and the first tour was in America. That was the beginning of a fantastic musical career for him.  I urge all parents to support their kids in whatever they dream to be. It's not easy but can be well worth it in the long term.

I'm glad your son did well, but I do wish people would realise that accountancy isn't maths. It's a very small subset of maths us old-timers got taught was called arithmetic, combined with understanding and remembering a multitude of arcane, often irrational laws.

You are technically correct Hola...

Arithmetic is just one branch of mathematics, namely that involving basic techniques of calculation with numbers.

Great topic Hola...and so relevant to our school system today and what's missing...Education and Creativity should go hand in hand..

The letter from the Singaporean Principal is pure gold..

I know you are very proud of your boy and rightly so...

What makes you say that education and creativity are not going hand in hand?

My father was a brilliant mathematician and his expectation of my progress in that field was very high, I was a bit of a rebel, I hated maths with a vengeance,so my stubborn streak ignored my ability to learn even though I was very smart.

Somehow a lot of the teaching filtered through and later in life I realised with my chosen and successful career, how much I used all those valuable teachings, and I was sorry I missed the opportunity to learn even more, I am still very smart but I am sure I would have climbed even higher through the years. If only we knew then what we know now, I would have been far more attentive, and spent less time doodling love hearts on my school books and staring out the window at the countryside...

By the way..I still enjoy my art....and count my blessings :)

Whilst the sentiments in this letter are pertinent here in Australia, this was an exceptionally brave school Principal in Singapore!

Not necessarily. Singapore hasn't become what it is without people like this principal - someone to recognise ability, beit intellectual or physical, and guide that ability in the right direction for optimum results. We are not talking about China or North Korea.

I can imagine most Australian principals expressing those same views.

Great country Singapore, great food, people and students who work hard. Yep

I love Singapore...they run a tight ship....no graffiti, safe to walk the streets at any time day or night...we could learn a lot.

...... yeah ........   Better than our "limp wristed' judicial system!  When I was there it was delightful ..........my sister and her family -  have lived there the past 12 years ......... loves it!
