If the dispicable acts in Colombo are truly a response to the Christchurch shootings just how ignorant are perpetrators of this kind? Christchurch wasn't a matter of Christians killing Moslems but allegedly a raving mad white supremicist killing people he objects to. 

If these dingbats want revenge then they would be one step closer finding a group of Nazis and declaring war on them.

What is also plain is that Australians are largely unaware of the discrimination and terrorism affecting Christians world-wide.  Why that is so is a question that should be asked.  Maybe the 'fact-finding' ABC might care to fill us in.  And then again, maybe not.

 

Blaming terror and violence on religion, as many today are too eager to do, is very dangerous.What many forget is that religion, is a man-made construct, religion and atheism are both human designs and are therefore very similar in character. That both can act in aggressive and cruel ways is no surprise, as each emanates from the same source: religion, atheism and terrorism are all products of humanity’s primary and at times violent nature.

Terrorism existed for a long time and it will continue. However, blaming all Muslims is just being ignorant of history. Nowadays when we think of terrorism, we think of the Middle East. However, terrorism, with its long history, didn’t start there.  In the late 60s and early 70s before 1972, if you said the word terrorist, many people would believe that you were speaking about the IRA or Neo-Nazis or KKK. You can't blame, Christianity for what Hilter did with the Jews nor Judaism for the suicide attacks carried out by JDL or Islam for what ISIS are doing.

The civil war in Sri Lanka was between Buddhists and Tamil Hindus. Christians and Muslims have lived peacefully together with no problems but both groups have been harassed to various degrees by Buddhist nationalists in recent years. These latest terrorist attacks were carried out by IS. They were organised internationally and took many months of planning which began well before the attack on Muslims in NZ. So no matter what anyone says, it is most unlikely that they were revenge attacks. IS is not Islam. It is a group of fundamentalist Islamic terrorist lunatics believing themselves to be at war with the western world and all so called infidels. Fundamentalism is the enemy, not Muslims who generally live peaceful lives. White supremacists are also fundamentalist in their ideology and thus the enemy of peace loving people. We do not say they represent all whites do we? No, and we should not regard IS to be representative of all Muslims. People who hate and fear all Muslims because of IS’s murderous antics are doing exactly what IS wants...they are furthering division between people in the world. 

 

 

 

Terrorism fears do not justify Islamophobia..in fact..blaming all Muslims for terrorist acts only fuels more terrorism. Innocent ordinary Australian Muslim citizens are being “blamed” for things they did not do..for crimes they did not commit.

The reality is..most victims of Islamophobia have nothing to do with international conflicts, terrorism or radicalisation…but they are constantly at the receiving end of the anger and hate by radical bigots and extremist right wing racists who firmly believe that there is something inherently wrong with ALL Muslims and it is their right to voice their dangerous opinions even on a Seniors’ forum.

Ignoring Islamophobia will only entrench the problem more deeply..so really it is up to every free thinking, honest and intelligent individual to jump on it every time it raises its ugly head.

Freedom of speech is important..however..freedom of hateful inciteful speech is definitely not.

We all discriminate, I hope. I like brussels spouts you don't. You like mutton, I dont. I like minimal police presence, you like them visible. You think this religion is OK, I don't. Discrimination is good if you are open about it, respectful and open to reason. Just the same I cannot see why anybody would discriminate because you are brown and I am blue.

Some here for example are particulary down on the Islamic faith. Taste or idle claims based on geographically limited practices don't stand as justification for encouraging unthinking hatred of it universally however. These have no place in rational discussion. They are damaging and quite fairly associated with "hate" speech.

For myself, I cannot fully understand why any bother with religions. They can perhaps have a benign edge but they can also at least border on the hateful, amplifying contrasts. Yet, individuals should be free to believe what they want only censured when they represent a danger. It has been easy to live, work with and communicate with a quite wide slice of humanity and I expect that only the very few carry inherent danger unless they are whipped up into some ridiculous ignorant frenzy.

That says nothing about the core of the Sri Lankan problem - that the terrorists were apparently intelligent, well educated and from well-off, privileged backgrounds.  Also, what was it in Australia that caused a student at a prestigious, sandstone Victorian university to 'become radicalised'?

The rejoinder could be that smart people choose to do some very stupid and very selfish things too.  For example, the number of white-collar professionals who make cocaine and recreational drugs so profitable for the criminal gangs they say they are horrified by and oppose.  But that is no answer is it?

Perhaps the discussion could attempt to grasp a few thorny issues instead.

 

If you look worldwide, it is indisputable that Islamic extremism has been and continues to be responsible for numerous serious security incidents. 

So you cannot dismiss Islamic fundamentalism being expressed or lived by anyone as low risk and certainly not low consequence if the person acts out that fundamentalism.  

That includes a fundamentalist past and associations.  One hopes that the Australian security and immigration authorities are not limiting their concerns about individuals and groups solely to present, proved radical membership/activity.

Australia is in the fortunate position of being easily able to attract the very best skilled and motivated migrants.  It would be ridiculous if more suitable candidates are being knocked back because someone who is less suitable and possibly higher risk - which includes increased likelihood of not fitting into this culture - is being preferred instead.  Who knows though where the diversity tail (and virtue-signalling!) is constantly swinging the immigration dog.

Of course, other religious fundamentalism can also be of concern, but pointing the finger at others does not treat nor does it diminish the main risk which is Islamic fundamentalism. 

And Muslim migrants living here presumably do not want to encourage here what they have previously sought to flee and been granted asylum and refuge from.  Australian Muslims rightly fear the threat that can be imported and developed here and in trying to modernise Islam they must feel at risk of being sent to Coventry by others.  They need our support.  -Which is why Ayaan Hirsi Ali should be invited to visit on a speaking tour and given every protection.

If Labor takes government 'diversity' will stand unchallenged as the main goal of immigration. 

As well, Labor thumbs its nose at the public's rejection of a 'Big Australia' and along with the Greens, see no worth in preferencing people with usable education and skills.  They want Australia to shoulder the over-population problems of the world and even of countries far away from here, on the other side of the world.  Some virtue signalling!

So, even if you are right in what you argue and some perhaps many might share your exasperation with federal politicians' refusal (both sides) to engage with public concerns about mass immigration and particularly that diversity agenda, the fact is that there are many adherents to Islam in Australia and Islam worldwide is the only one of the three great religions that escaped The Enlightenment. The Enlightenment delivered the secularism and the rights many Australians take for granted today. 

It is another inescapable truth that where there is Islam, the population suffers from all manner of ills that are unthinkable in the developed democracies.  You and most people recognise that.

More than 2 billion people worldwide recognise the Quran as the direct word of God and their unquestioned moral guide.  Pew polls and research studies have found worrying effects from that.

 

So yes, I say that the first priorities must be to: 1) support Muslims who want to reform Islam, by welcoming well-meaning and knowledgeable speakers like Ayaan Hirsi Ali (she has matured her approach somewhat); and 2) accept and integrate Australia's Muslim population, especially the young and adolescents.

 

 

Scholars who have studied both the Islamic scriptures in the Quran  and the Bible have agreed the Quranic verses are far less bloody and less violent than those in the Bible. These are only a few of the horrendous verses in the Christian Bible. I am Christian and do not follow these rules – the vast majority of Muslims do NOT follow the rules in the Quran.

Is that based on Bilby's last Aviator? I have read it and recognise, firstly, opinion. Then some quotation presented as fair representation that I cannot corroborate.

Opinion about the relative qualities of Isalm, Judaism and Christianity. Atheist or not he has a right to that opinion.

Certainly, the quotations need to be correct and taken in context. Regardless of whether they are or not, no thinking person would take them as other than the hate or ignorant, murderous, over-enthusiasm expressed by individuals. Bilby may see the quoted thoughts as typical, that is his right but he would be deluded in that.

Free speech has its responsibilities, limitations if you will but where it is not aimed at whipping up unjustified response it is important that it be available. The response Bilby seeks may not be justified; history will tell. It may not accord with the thoughts of you and I. His view that is justified, however, appears genuine.

Where the major political parties have consistently refused to engage with the Australian public on immigration policy and the mainstream media have gone along with that - immigration being the sacred cow that can only be lauded and given boosts but never queried or (shock horror) constructively criticised - it is only natural that some folk will be drawing their own conclusions and from the information sources that are available to them. 

While some of the opinions being expressed here may be questionable, some of the very positive marketing factoids of immigration over the years have been contestible too, but rarely if ever addressed as such and more likely scoffed at.

Many reviews have recommended a population policy for Australia, but the federal Parliament has done nothing.  

 

In essence bilby and others are asking for a population policy and for due consideration of public opinion in its formulation.  It shouldn't be just the preserve of the political elite.  This is a democracy and we have freedom of speech.  Or are those quaint notions reserved for Anzac Day speechmaking when the ordinary public remember their dead?
