The End of World War 2

Today is the anniversary of the end of WW2. I have not heard one mention of it on TV, radio or in newspapers. Surely such an event is worth celebrating or certainly remembering the thousands of Aussies who died defending our own very country.

Yep, too right. The Japanese lost but they still marked the event.

TOKYO (AP) — For his last time, Japan's Emperor Akihito addressed a memorial service Wednesday marking the end of World War II. Once again, he expressed "deep remorse" for the war.

It was in keeping with what by all appearances has become a mission for Akihito over his 30-year reign: to make amends for a war fought in the name of his father, Hirohito. The 84-year-old monarch is set to abdicate next spring.

"Reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never be repeated," Akihito said in a two-minute speech on the 73rd anniversary of Japan's surrender.

As emperor, he has made unprecedented visits to the Philippines and other Pacific islands conquered by Japan early in World War II and devastated in fierce fighting as the U.S.-led allies took them back. Though Akihito has avoided a direct apology, he has subtly stepped up his expressions of regret in recent years in carefully scripted statements on the war.

History is no longer taught in school.Just another way our society is being "dumbed down". Just watch some of the so-called quiz shows on tv and see how little the general public really knows about history and a lot of other subjects. Particular;y the younger generation, who seem to have little general knowledge and don't seem to be very well read on much at all.

Bollocks. When were you last in a school? History units are core in junior secondary humanities courses, and then students can opt for history as a specialist subject onwards. Modern History, ancient history, even classical studies can be on offer. World War Two is usually offered in Year 10. If you believe it should be compulsory so that people can have more success in quiz shows, then please nominate the subjects it should replace. And then join the queue of everyone else who wants something else taught in schools, like self defence, budgeting, more basics ( whatever they are), deportment, ballroom dancing, more physical education to name a few which have cropped up in the last few weeks.

The end of the War in the Pacific was in September 1945 and April in Europe. They bombed Japan on August 6th.

There were several end dates with the war in Europe and the Pacific so the 11th November was the date chosen to remember as well as Anzac day on the 25th April as the world already had these days somberly marked from WW1.

I know my father didn't want to relive horrendous events continually bought to life in the media. Most of our veterans from WW2 are no longer with us so it probably is time to just have our special two days.

I am sure this may be very close to your heart and I do know some schools virtually ignore our special dates of rememberance. However it is still covered in history classes and it is so important we don't forget.

Yes, we are glossing over history.

Originally, it was VJ Day (Victory over Japan) but the revisionists got at it and changed it to VP Day (Victory in the Pacific) although I do not recall any enemy other than the Japanese and it was not only in the pacific - think Singapore, Indonesia, Malaya, Burma, PNG etc.

My uncles and aunts et al will still be rolling in their graves at this travesty of historical fact.

Yes,Crowcrag, its been a while since I have been to school. And , no I don't need to nominate subjects to be taught for success in quiz shows. My reason for using that as an example was to show that many people seem to have not much background education or interest in anything outside of their small sphere of interest.

Are we being "dumbed" down. Yes, I believe so. Maybe you're right, I do think that far too much is expected from schools in the way of teaching subjects. I really think that priority should be given to the basics of a good education, not trying to cram everything in a few short years.

As far as history goes, I would suggest that not enough is taught as it seems that we tend to repeat the same blunders. As the sayings goes" those that do not learn from history are doomed to repea it"
