The plastic ocean

Every year more than one million marine animals die from plastic debris.

Environmental group Sea Shepherd has produced an advertising campaign to highlight the plight of marine animals and to encourage people to reduce their reliance on plastic.

Watch the video here:

What do you think of the ad? Do you think it will encourage people to use less plastic?

I signed but I have notion that they will ask for donations next.

If the darn stuff is NOT manufactured the problem will be solved.

Agree Radish. So much ridiculous, superfluous packaging these days ... such as pic below seen online this week.

Yes I agree Radish AND when the supermarkets STOP this silly packaging

Well everytime you see this stupid packaging go and complain to the manager -- they will soon get very sick of it

Actually the products are packaged by the supplier not the supermarket.

the main reason for that being the customers who think it is their right to overhandle and squeeze the fruits, spreading their germs over the goods which others are expected to buy. ... for that reason I prefer my fruits packaged.

There is a product called Vege Wash...I use that on any fruit vegetables before I eat.

However I recently came across this home made spray.

INGREDIENTS·                      SPRAY·

 1tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1tablespoon baking soda

1cup water

14cup vinegar

2tablespoons salt·

  DIRECTIONS

For the spray; put all ingredients into a spray bottle (be careful as it will foam up) shake gently to mix, then spray on veggies or fruit allow to sit for about 2-5 minutes then rinse under cold water.

For soak; fill a clean sink or a large basin with cold water; add in vinegar and salt, then swish around with hands (you may also do this in a large bowl).

Place the fruit and/or veggies in and allow to sit for 25-30 minutes although I have even left soaking for over an hour (this will not affect the flavor at all, the vinegar cleans and the salt draws out any little bugs, dirt and other small unwanted things, it also will remove some of the wax.Rinse under cold water and dry.

I use apple cider and water rinse on my fruits but still prefer my fruit not to be handled by more people than necessary.

Definitely do not need some shopper's nail an finger markson my fruit.

It there anyone that does NOT wash there fruit AND veg b4 they use -- I always wash in vinegar and rinse in water and I always wash any fruit b4 it is peeled too -- I object to anything I buy fresh to be readily packed as I like to see it is not damaged or going off b4 I buy it

Go back to greaseproof paper and newspaper and get some free germs.

:) Yep ... go the immunity builders.

LOL I remeber those days very well

Good on those who have already signed!

I've just put the following link in "Stuff and Things" thread and thought I'd repeat on here. Please sign the petition if you are really serious about plastic pollution. If anyone is interested(and I imagine everyone would be), they can sign this petition:

Happy Earth Day, 22nd April. Every signature counts.

Although I've signed KIAH, the ban on plastic bags only relates to single-use plastics thinner than 35 microns or 0.035 millimetres (human hair ranges from about 60 to 120 microns). Still it's a start!

Me too KIAH, signed, sealed and delivered.

@ Reagan, mesmerising picture, LOL my friend.

Best to ignore the geriatric bogan.

I think that lot of this off topic.

Almost all plastic can be recycled so where are the recycling stations.

Our closest is 50kms away

Our rubish gets trucked and burried in Queensland

Even with the trucking costs it is cheaper to dump the rubbish in QLD than pay for the NSW leve of $138 per tonne of waste sent to landfill

Cambodia's plastic coast.

Full Guardian story.

1 in 3 fish caught for human consumption now containing plastic, the question is no longer are we eating plastic but how bad for us is that? In seawater plastic absorbs chemicals like PCB’s and DDT’s which have been linked to endocrine disruption and even some cancers, becoming more powerful as they work their way up the food chain.

Also, the plastics AND medications we are using is causing fish to have a change in their hormones as well  -- and we are then absorbing more hormones AND medications that we do not need -- like I have said it is a cog in a wheel,  damage one and it ends up wiping out the whole system

This may contribute to the increasing numbers of people with disabilities.
