Just a question.. were the parents this stupid before they became vegans?

It is an awful story. That level of irresponsibility with children is unimaginable and here their own children. Depression cannot be an excuse nor can no power to do something about it. We are so well endowed with services that it would take seconds or minutes to find help.

It does worry me though that these things could potentially be blown up disproportionately by the adversarial legal system, by medical personnel or media all for their own benefit. Not that this one has necessarily, it doesn't sound a lot like it.

I am an example where unwarranted negative spins could be placed. Born with constrictions around my stomach, my concerned parents had me to doctors far more often than they could afford at the time. By 9 months, still my birth weight, I was flown the then considerable distance to Sydney spending a further 9 months hospitalised there. Feeding was intravenous. My exit weight was also very low. Within months I was normal. Not tall at 5'10" I am at least considerably taller than my parents and probably a touch above average for the year of birth. I know I am no Einstein though some of my IQ test scores would have made him proud if he would ever be proud of something as trivial. My health and strength has been pretty fair.

We seem fairly resilient. We also seem to be capable of existing on a wide range of diets. Mine for at least a year and a half was raw egg and milk. Horrible (but the prescribing doctors never faced an inquisition.)

There is no doubt in my mind that appropriate choices could be made under a vegan diet but the child's health demands that those choices be properly understood and if that is not the case then we have a responsibility to use more regularly proven means.

Apparently the parents each face up to five years in prison for which the Taxpayer has to pay,

and the Taxpayer is also facing National Disability Pension for the child's life.

Already the Government is paying a Carer's Pension fot the infant's two elder brothers.

Yes people should have a license to have children.

agree and it seems that there are mothers who are in the child bearing age who think they know it all and are not vaccinating their kids  and other some such nonsense they go on with.  no wonder so many littlies are suffering all sorts of things such as depression and have such bad eating habits.
