Three Unofficial Secrets about Australia's Housing Problem

I wanted to share this short article from the website of gavin putland, whose writing I admire ........

Secret 1:  The purpose of encouraging home ownership is to create a majority of voters who own real estate and who therefore support policies that make real estate as expensive as possible, for the benefit of the biggest owners.

Secret 2:  The purpose of financing home ownership through debt instead of equity is to make sure it's the millions of mortgaged “owners”, and not the handful of financiers, who fear falling house prices, and to make the consequences of any such fall as serious as possible, so that politicians must do everything in their power to prop up prices — and the most recent graduates from rent-slavery to debt-slavery are the most fervent supporters of the policies that make their lives difficult!

Secret 3:  One reason for the persistence of conveyancing stamp duty, in spite of its demonstrable downward effect on price/rent ratios, is that it discriminates against equity-based methods of financing home acquisition (by taxing them twice), and therefore props up debt financing, which props up the policies that prop up prices.

Single pensioner renting = $1007.70 fortnight, plenty of money.

I think you covered the situation well overleaf ...well put Pixapd.

You won't be very popular for saying that you know Pixapd :)!!

.... must be living in Dept,. of Housing?  Obviously not a pensioner in Private Rental??  Has no bloody clue what talking about! Lives on "Mars" or some other Planet possibly?

Maybe should stick to the regular "Bible Bashing" posts?    lol lol

for some people 5 thousand a week wouldnt be enough for them

(SHIT MY POKER MACHINE BILL ALONE IS 5000!)

or

(WHAT IF NONE OF MY HORSES WIN THAT WEEK? 5000? ARE YOU STUPID OR WHAT?)

on the other hand, if the pensioner isnt mentally challenged and makes the effort to live within their means, 1000 per fortnight is adequate. you wont be able to gamble 5500 per week, or drive a 50k car, or dine out in expensive restraunts every night and be able to rent a 2000 per week luxury unit at palm beach, but hey, you can live in an affordable place for about 300 per fortnight, have 700 left to feed yourself for 2 weeks, buy a few luxurys and run a modest sized 2nd hand car, and if you cant manage on that, then go someplace else where they have a better retirement scheme for people who for whatever reason, didnt plan for their retirement. perhaps yemen or ethiopa or uganda or someplace where prices arent as high?

...... air conditioned tent in Saudi maybe?   Trouble is - you can't drink there?     lol lol
