1938 - the freak waves on Bondi beach. I wonder, were they little tsunamis?

Monday, 6 February 2017

Robi,

When I lived in Rabaul many moons ago I was yarning to the blokes in the met office at the airport and they told me a tsunami was due to arrive in a half hours time or thereabouts so I wandered down the beach and waited. It was dead calm, not a ripple. Then right on time this tiny little wave, maybe ankle high rounded the corner and went plop at my feet, just wetting them as if to say. "I am here, that's your lot, enjoy."

I returned to the met office to inform them of this three inch waves arrival and how it had struck terror to the very fibre of my being.

At least I can say I have experienced the might of a midget tsunami !!

Take it easy.

Great reading again RnR. Heaps of lost/forgotten info. there.

Yes we can always learn from history, thanks again RnR

Phyl,

Yes I am liking RnRs morning history lesson.

SD

Thanks folks. Wonder what tomorrow will bring ... haven't peeked yet.

Thanks RnR thanks to you something for all of to enjoy so along with Toots topic makes YLC a good place to visit :)

Rather dreadful figures on child abuse by the Catholic Church on the news tonight.

I would say a major overhaul with many changes will be the only solution. More women in the system for one.

Very sad to hear.

SD

Absolutely shocking, 40% of Priests in the Brothers of St John of God. Did they join because they knew it was corrupt or did they become corrupted after joining. I find it horrendously unbelievable that the remaining 60% knew nothing about it.

Yes I notice that in the figures 40 per cent of Christian Brothers are seen as pedophiles ,

if parents were faced with these figures as a school they would be insisting the school was closed down .

SD and Brocky this horrible revelation deserves a Topic of its own. Would one of you set it up? It would be best to keep such tragic news separate from this one which is meant to be a casual happy Topic.

A case of female genital mutilation (FGM) is either discovered or treated in England every hour, according to analysis of NHS statistics by a charity.
Between April 2015 and March 2016 there were 8,656 times when women or girls attended doctors' surgeries or hospitals and the problem was assessed - the equivalent of one every 61 minutes.

Anothet topic not generaly teported .

Vivety I don't know as yet how to create a topic . Sorry to spoil your positive one

I HAVE MOVED THIS TO "SEXUAL ABUSE" TOPIC FOR YOU

Rotherham child sex gang shout 'Allahu Akbar' in court as they are jailed for abusing girls including one who became pregnant at just 12 after being groomed with alcohol and drugs
Members of a Rotherham sex gang today yelled 'Allahu Akbar' in court as they were jailed for abusing a girl who fell pregnant aged 12 after being groomed with alcohol.
Six men were given sentences between 10 years and 20 years - and totalling more than 80 years - by a judge who heard details of how two young girls were sexually abused in the South Yorkshire town between 1999 and 2001.
Judge Sarah Wright described how one of the girls was plied with alcohol and drugs and was having sex with a number of men from the age of 11.
The victim, in a statement read to the court, said: 'There's evil and truly evil people in the world. I feel my child was the product of pure evil.'

Another undereported situation why?

Don't Worry Brocky I will put it up for you under the title Sexual Abuse and copy these there - just hold off for a moment putting anything else on here

Brocky, I think the Rotherham case is  because it was probably feared the amount of panic it would cause in the community.  It's pretty disgusting and heaven help everyone if any form of sharia law  comes  to this country

Yeah  Brocky,I feel it is just the tip of the iceberg regarding paedophiles not only in   the catholic church but where there are large numbers of young boys.

I think we should return this post to what Vivety intended . A pleasant chat . Of whatever comes into your mind .

I apologise for spoiling it .

Thank you Vivety for creating a new post

You're a very understanding person  Brocky, very surprised  at vivety's  behaviour

Thanks for being so understanding Brocky.

Reagan, not sure why you are 'very surprise' at Vivity's behaviour,  I understand where she's coming from, a serious topic such as this should have a thread of it's own... at least that way it won't get lost amongst other topics...

I don't see where Vivety has done anything wrong .

Brocky I am intrigued by your name, I grew up in Brockenhurst in the New Forest home to Badgers which are called Brocks or Brockys any connection to your name?

a good move by VIVITY,   threads tend to trashed when to many subjects are put up,   this is definetly one that needs its one thread,

Afraid not . It's a shortened version of my surname .

Although I do think the New Forest is a lovely area

Well thanks for triggering childhood memories of being taken out in the moonlight to watch for the Badgers ... The New Forest was a good place to grow up in.

1812 – Charles Dickens, English novelist and social critic is born.
1812 – Lord Byron makes his maiden speech in House of Lords.
1863 – HMS Orpheus sinks off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand, killing 189. Orpheus Island off the coast of Queensland was named after the corvette in 1887 in memory of the loss of life.
1904 – The Great Baltimore Fire began destroying much of central Baltimore (1500 buildings in 80 blocks).
1940 – The second full-length animated Walt Disney film, Pinocchio, is released.
1943 – US institutes rationing of leather shoes. Each man, woman, and child could purchase up to three pairs of leather shoes a year using designated stamps in War Ration Book One.
1962 – US President Kennedy begins blockade of Cuba by banning all Cuban imports and exports.
1964 – Beatles land at NYC’s JFK airport for their first US tour.
1967 – The Black Tuesday bushfires were the most deadly bushfires that Tasmania has ever experienced, leaving 62 people dead, 900 injured and over seven thousand homeless.
2009 – The Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria leave 173 dead in the worst natural disaster in Australia's history.

We were on holiday in Victoria in 2009 and had to drive through the aftermath of burntout bushland, I couldn't believe it when I heard that the police chief went out to dinner the same day 173 people were killed.  I have a picture of her in my mind even today and will never forget it.

So were we Toot (holidaying) ... scary and heartbreaking scenes.
