Tony Abbott buys second-hand fridge

It seems times are tough for our former Prime Minster Tony Abbott, who has been surfing Gumtree for a second-hand bargain.

Mr Abbott and his wife Margie bought a $300 Daewoo fridge from student Emily Hastings and the former PM was only too happy to pose for a pic.

With an annual member’s salary of around $200,000, as well as any other income he receives, Mr Abbott may no be short of a dollar, but it’s good to see he’s as frugal as the rest of us.

Do you think Mr Abbot was really interested in a second-hand fridge or is the opportunity to prove he’s just an average bloke priceless?

If Margie Abbott (who actually was the one who purchased it so I believe) wanted to buy a second hand frig for use over the Xmas season good on her for not forking out full price.

I would have done the same if I needed the extra space over the Xmas season.  I also understand he has quite a big mortgage to pay off.

How it got into the media I do not know but suspect the seller posted it on Facebook or something similar and away it went.   was happy to see Tony Abbott removed as PM but to keep on hounding the man is beyond the pale.

Is this the new Aussie way;  kick a man when he is down??

Now now Radish, Abbott is the hated symbol of leftism today. Was Howard. And of course Turnbull himself is a leftie and we will rue the day he got to be PM - in fact he is already stacking up billions in wasted monies. 1 billion + on a climate which is normal and has been for last 18 years.Must get the left's goat every time we have a weather event, can be followed up with except for record 30 40 50 or so years ago. Ha Ha.

Now he is off on a Rudd type ideas forum that gain us nothing and cost even more borrowings spending money  and yet another billion. When we are still having to borrow 110 million each and every day to pay for running Australia as revenue down due to taking in dole bludgers by the thousand and of course the downturn in China causing mining and all else to slow.

But worse, he has taken the bankruptcy down to 1 years! this will cost taxpayers again in failed start ups. Already is with the current 3 years.

Can only cost billions in the end as they fail and start again in 1 year and we pick up tab.

Nah Only reason he got polls up is Labor/Green voters love a leftie. And Turnbull is showing his colours now his honeymoon is over. We are now seeing how he is taking the party to the left.

I was hoping the new party everyone is so excited about would have candidates in both houses but not so. Senate only.

Its policies are pure common sense and a business plan to get Australia out of the red into the black and build it back to The Lucky Country once again.  Wish them luck with that.

Not sure about your view of MT as I think its more the perception than the reality. If you look at his economic leanings you might see a dry liberal and very much pro big business. He is more Howard and less Rudd while needing nothing than to not be Abbott at the moment.

I really couldn't agree more with you geomac. Why people see the need to vent their political viewpoints - often in total ignorance of the facts - keeps me baffled. The article was about buying a second-hand fridge. Good on the man for doing so. I would say the same about Bill Shorten. It has nothing to do with politics. Why can't people give it a break?

Yes, it is frustrating johnp and I agree with your comments.  The post is about a darn second hand fridge...which just happened to be bought by the wife of a previous PM.

Would there have been the same angst if it was Bill Shorten who bought it...I would say probably not!

The whole thing is just to petty for words!

..... no one would ever have known if it wasn't for the "selfie-freak" ! lol  Surprised Abbott agreed to the pic?  Weird?   Least he got the fridge - Gumtree is well known for "Scammers" ....       :-)

I don't blame the Union/Labor few for this pile of shite thread , they are suffering relevance depredation syndrome .

But the low level of undergrad journalism on this site is an insult to the majority of readers .

Pete, you do post (copy/paste) all right wing posts. So why whinge about something you perceive to be left wing ?

I do not even see this thread as political and really am not interested in a second hand fridge.

If you want a forum that is completely right wing then I am sure you can find one easily.

This is the general section and an ex PM buying a second hand frifge fits the section. What posters comment or opine is up to them. Now how the royals thread belongs in hot topics I have no idea because its a general topic ie womans day. Personally I couldn,t give a fig what they do or did.Our chief whinger puts up an anti labor/union thread at least once a week yet moans about a fluff thread put up in general.

The topic regarding the fridge is general fluff that can be amusing to some or boring to others. Maybe if Abbott went quiet in the media it would not be worth posting though all ex PMs manage to make news even if its sculling a beer in their eighties.

Yes amazing that a bloke like Abbott and HIS earnings has a $700.000 + mortgage makes you wonder how he expected to run the country when he is unable to look after his own debt

I think, the wealthier the person, the more tight they are. My husband was working for a well known businessman in the Eastern Suburbs who wanted to borrow  an article we had for sale to see if it would suit his bedroom. My husband agreed and he came back with it 3 weeks later saying it wasn't suitable. He mentioned it had a crack in the glass, which wasn't there when he took it. When my husband pointed the crack out to him he had the hide to say, "It's insured isn't it." Did my husband see RED, lucky the man had paid before he took it so there was no way he was going to get his money back. He was not too happy about it. These people are millionaires and I would love to mention his name but can't. I could go on about others but it's all in the past now.

A second hand fridge purchase making the front page.......

I think that's pretty cool !
