I don't know how this subject has risen it's ugly head, BUT I think somebody is looking to visit there.  Nobody has asked me but I want to give a couple of words of advice.  Indonesia is actually, in reality 2 countries.  Indonesia & Bali.  Balinesian people are not Indonesian, however they are under the Government of one of the most corrupt regimes in the World.  I have been to both, on business,  but Bali on many occasions & I would not allow anybody close to me to visit either as a naive tourist.  You have no idea of the potential of death you face there.  What would you do or say if a customs officer says that it will cost you $20 to NOT find drugs in your luggage?  Added to this is the risk of terrorism that is beyond your comprehension.

Yet each year parents pay for their schoolies holiday there.

You can understand the kids wanting to go but not the parents for letting them.

I am afraid that I have no understanding of modern parents.  The only good thing about letting your daughters celebrate Schoolies in Bali is that it saves the boys parents a lot of money on prostitutes.

Been to Bali twice;  over 20 odd years ago.  No wish to go back.  Large numbers go from WA all the time as it is a cheap overseas holiday for many who would not otherwise ever get outside the country.

Unfortunately, many do not realise that they are NOT in Australia and carry on as they would here.  Every time my step children go there we  heave a sigh of relief when they get back OK.  One of them was going to set up a business there (a holiday entertainment project ).  However the corruption and kickbacks he encountered was shocking and in the end he called a halt to it all and lost a considerable amount of money but would have lost a lot more if he had continued on.

The smart traveller web site should be listened to, but I doubt many even bother to check it out before taking off over there.

No way would I be paying for a child to go there for schoolies...I think the whole thing is stupid anyway.

I agree with you totally, the whole schoolies thing is completely silly and each year it amazes me how parents can sit in their homes and let their children go off on these jaunts. The whole scene scares me.

Bali used to be such a good holiday destination, now it's a very scary place, yet peope flock there.

Having been there myself albeit several years ago, I think any parent that allows a teenager to go there without adult supervision is culpable. It is a very DANGEROUS place and the young are easy targets for criminals, scammers, rapists etc - many crimes against tourists go unreported and statistics are often misleading. The police there are no better than the criminals they are supposed to be catching.

I would think our kids would be safer in Bali than Australia . If they are not aware of the death penalty in Bali by now then what hope is there.,

"SYDNEY’S GEN Y party-goers are well aware of the deadly consequences but their love affair with ecstasy shows no signs of slowing, with police angry they’ve learnt nothing from a fatal string of senseless overdoses.

Deaths from taking so-called party drugs have become a regular occurrence at raves despite repeated warnings from NSW police and doctors about the risk to their lives by taking potentially lethal cocktails of party drugs.

This is the tragic timeline of so many young lives lost to festival drugs."

There is a big difference Pete.  In Sydney the kids have a choice.  In Bali, they could be loaded up by the local Police who are looking for a pay off.

Australians have a wonderful word called "drongo".

I think that term aptly applies to those people who still take drugs even though they know that people have just died from them.

Hate the term "party drugs" drugs are drugs end of story.

Just cannot fathom that people will hand over money to buy drugs to put into their system not having a clue as to what they are ingesting.  Totally NUTS!!
