Trust in government takes a dive

Australia has had six prime ministers in 11 years, but was the toppling of Malcolm Turnbull last month the final straw for many?

Community reaction since has suggested that an overwhelming number of Australians are turning their backs on government – at all levels – and viewing proceedings with increasing distrust.

A phone survey of 2218 adults, conducted by Griffith University and Transparency International Australia, supports that perception.

It found that trust and confidence in all levels of government had fallen to 46 per cent for federal and state levels and to 51 per cent for local government.

It also found mounting concerns about public officials or politicians using their positions to benefit themselves and their families.

Project leader Professor AJ Brown, of Griffith University, said: "Continued slippage in the perceived integrity of federal officials clearly has a disproportionate effect on overall trust and confidence, nationwide."

The survey found a nine per cent increase in the view that federal members of parliament are corrupt, with 85 per cent of respondents saying at least "some" are corrupt and 18 per cent believing "most or all" are corrupt.

Sixty-seven per cent of respondents supported the creation of a federal anti-corruption body, with 43 per cent expressing strong support.

TRUST?  Not a word you can use in Canberra and this government since Tony Abbott is the most dishonest low life group of MPs ever to disgrace the office.  Elected on INTENTIONAL lies which Abbott tore up after he was put into office and has been going the same way ever since.

This lot has no shame and believes it is bullet proof because uncle Rupert and uncle Kerry (Stokes) will run their routine election propaganda campaigns to get them back in.  7 News has already began grooming Morrison to harness votes.  We need laws to stop this!

MICK, you are doing a great job there for GetUp, but seriously mate, you need to make sense sometimes if you want credibilty with your argument.

Tell me if you had the magic wand for a day, after you made a law that people shouldnt have opinions which differ from yours, would you then also pass a bill that insists on people trusting your party?

You must keep taking the "truth pills" Mick

Yep Mick, take Polly's advice you must keep taking those "truth pills"LOL

MICK, now and then you make sensible comments, free of any bias, and then you come up with this. Sure, Abbott promised one thing then did another but he's not Robinson Crusoe in this regard. I won't bore you with what both sides, as well as the minor players, have promised and then reneged on, but rest assured that it has happened in the past and, sadly, will happen in the future.

If you are prepared to have laws to stop the media supporting one side or the other then there should be laws to stop unions and other lobbyists from telling lies about what one side or the other will do. It's no surprise that politics has been excluded from the laws regarding truth in advertising.

MICK....The entire Liberal Party stink not just Abbott. Morrison's same rotten policies won't make Australia a better place to live in. They ALL are a bunch of puppets for the Corporations and filthy rich that Govern us not them.

jackie - are you off your meds again ?

Abbot only got in because it was - "anybody but Rudd" a bit like a Drover's Dog waiting to get rid of Fraser. Bill Hayden was replaced by Hawkie in the nick of time and "the Drover's Dog" was Bill's coin at the time and we all had to agree.

Its not too difficult to identify the communist sympathisers amongst us.

They're the ones shouting with excitement "people have lost faith in democracy"

They wish LOL!!

Labor dips in latest Newspoll as Scott Morrison widens lead over Bill Shorten and the chap can dance, as well

LOL

Good onya Scott! Lets put the cool back into school. He's more fun than that serious guy Shorten.

Why is he always being taken at schools? Those poor little kids won't be voting for another 15 years. He'll be Gonski before then!!!!

Adrianus....Underage children cannot vote no matter how much sucking up to them you do. It wouldn't surprise me if he was a pedophiie. We already have had a Prime Minister that was.

ever had a look at yourself in the mirror????

... ScuMo should join the Wiggles - pathetic moron!

Really jackie?? Which PM was a paedophile???

He is relying on sending the goodie 2 shoes message back to mum and dad that is what he is doing.

Good on ya Scotty, he's got the moves like Jagger, hahaha

How can you not like the guy. Just read the New York Times and they can't speak highly enough of him in the Big Apple.

The political circus:  when a party leader, a PM, is changed by vote of the parliamentry caucus or members, there is sudden angst in the media that public trust in politicians might be flagging,

but,

there was no such angst and hand-wringing when politicians were proved to abuse their position, even where allegations of pollies getting into bed with Communist China officials, with the notorious George Soros and so on.

The Oz media have a lot to answer for :(

If the libs introduce the franking credits like labour wants to this will do them quite a bit of harm. If they decide to put a cap of say $20000 on franking credits i would support that because that would not effect most of us that just have a little better income than the pension.

I also think Julie Biships is just having sour grapes by being dumped she has put herselt in the same cattergy  as Tony Abbott I thought she was above this but you can never tell with polititians

was also supprised that Paulines motion put to parliments to ban the burka  was defeated just goes to show that polies take no notice of what the people want because in most polls there are 80 % of the population want the burka banned.

I have had my say for today

you mean the cap of $20,000 suits you. A bit selfish don't you think

Too many grammatical errors in your post to be taken seriously, maybe you need to join ScoMo at the school above. And I give them my franking credits (way below your figure of $20'000)

I always judge a comment on content not Grandma, a lot of rubbish has been published over centuries that was grammatically correct, but it was still rubbish.
