Where are cruise ships registered?

Countries where cruise ships are registered

The Bahamas has by far the most number of registered ships (114). Malta has the second most with 41 registered cruise ships. Both the Bahamas and Malta have been declared as "Flag of Convenience" states by the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Flags of convenience make the cruise ship industry one of the world's least regulated, with owners and operators able to skirt more stringent workplace, health, safety and environmental rules.

For crew, particularly those in "lower level" service jobs, pay and conditions are poor. Many accept such conditions to earn money for their families. Hidden from view, even passengers can be oblivious to their conditions.

One would think outbreaks of COVID-19 on cruise ships would deter people from booking. Not so, according to multiple reports. Bookings for cruises are already on the rise for 2021. The cruise booking site CruiseCompete.com saw a 40% increase in its bookings for 2021 over its 2019 bookings. A recent report from UBS also found that 76% of the people who had a cancelled cruise in 2020 have chosen to accept credit towards a future cruise in 2021 as opposed to 24% who accepted a refund.

I have been on many cruises in my lifetime, but never on one of those cattle ships. How can anyone enjoy a holiday with so many on board! I think it will be many, many years before I even consider going on another cruise.

Like you I would never go on one of those cattle [cruise] ships Sophie! That is not my idea of a holiday. I doubt we would ever go on another cruise though.

It will go on.  Having experianced private cars, coaches and rail holidays, I much prefer a river cruise over all of them.

You get on board, unpack and don't have to repack again untill the journeys end.  You travel at night, dock the next day and either explore by yourselves or join an organized trip.  On the tripnI was on the mealscwere retaurant quality with the best that each province had to offer on the menu as we passed through.  Can't speak to blue water cruising as I have never tried it and to be honest it does not appeal.

It is much easier to keep to yourself in a ships cabin if you have to than on a train or coach.

We are booking a Russian cruise just as soon as this emergency is over.
