You are obviously correct, Brocky, but I feel that whilst they don't improve cognition, some may have some benefits to speed ... etc.

I am not quite sure I understand the difference .

Well "speed" - reaction time

Cognition is more about acquiring/understanding knowledge ...  use of thought process.

On another "tack"

I like to learn things ... or have the opportunity to do so.

MOOC (Massive Online Open Courseware)  provide hundreds upon hundreds of free couses from universities world-wide.   The courses range from IT technology, to business, the arts, languages, sciences ...

Yes it’s the future of education , Bricks are meaningless

Well, obviously, I think there will still be a need for universities (bricks and mortar).

I don't think I would have having surgery by one who had learnt it solely online  - :=/

But back to your point on Quora today was a question obviously posed by a kid who wanted his homework done which went something like .

If 76 is the answer and two numbers separated by 20 are the question what are they?

Now the answers obviously by over educated people involved a lot of algebra .

I simply looked at it divided it in half to get 38 then deducted 10 and added 10;

to get the answer of 28 and 48.

Yes, Brocky ... I smiled at your referance to Quora ...

Some people over-intellectualize things .. or are "intellectual snobs" (a contadiction in terms)

I was always taught KISS  "keep it simple stupid"

I have run many sales forces KISS was a commandment along with ABC always be closing.

Something Raph won’t enjoy given his exalted position in the economic world.

we always referred to the finance Dept as the Sales Prevention Dept.

I think the program MOOC  is wonderful because it democracises information/knowledge across the world.  None, because of race, religion, sex, age etc ...  is denied its benefits.

I understand that one can obtain a diploma (for a small fee) when completing some courses, if one wants to.

Regarding Universities. Today the brick universities have become trade schools where one goes to get a higher salary.

Hopefuly the on line Universities will replace and the brick unis will revert to places of learning .

Amen to that, Brocky, amen to that.

Unfortunately, we also see some university subjects actually indoctrination ... where students are told what to think, not how to think.

Yes the long march of the left has been successful until now.

Looking into the not so distant future of internet of things with automated production of material goods the automation of a lot of “Professional” services the reduction in population and living wage.

I see the brick Universities having a golden age like the Greeks and becoming schools of thought.
