Over the next few weeks, 36-million sterile Queensland fruit flies will be released across Perth's western suburbs in an effort to eradicate the insect pest from WA.

The Qfly is considered one of the world’s worst fruit pests, attacking a wide range of fruits, some fruiting vegetables and even ornamental plants.

Let's hope it works!

Trump agrees to begin transition as key agency calls Biden apparent election winner | US news | The Guardian

Donald Trump has accepted a formal US transition should begin for President-elect Joe Biden to take office.

The president said the federal agency overseeing the handover must "do what needs to be done", even as he vowed to keep contesting his election defeat.

The General Services Administration (GSA) said it was acknowledging Mr Biden as the "apparent winner".

It came as Mr Biden's victory in the state of Michigan was officially certified, a major blow to Mr Trump.

The United States at the instigation of a mad president formally left the 2015 Paris accord earlier this month becoming the first country to ever withdraw from an international climate change pact… that’s the bad news…

Great choice, let's see what Scomo will bring to the table as regards climate change, as he seems excited to keep good relations going with the US.

All we need now is a move away from fossil fuels and heading towards nuclear energy. Will take a while, so the time to start is now!!

SafeWA is the WA Government's free contact register app

From 5 December 2020, particular businesses will be required to maintain contact registers for WA Health Department COVID-19 contact tracing, if required.

If COVID-19 is detected in the WA community, contact registers help to protect us all by enabling the WA Health Contact Team to quickly identify and assist anyone that may have been exposed to COVID-19.

To assist, the WA Government has developed a free app, SafeWA, which will provide businesses with a digital contact register system.

SafeWA is an efficient and safe way to record patron and visitor contact details where they can check-in, using the app.

Now that's sensible, won't be long before the rest of Oz follows the lead. Think I'll persuade the wife to come and live in WA!

Methinks they like each other, good on you Joe!

Perth family of Amelia 'Milli' Lucas 'blown away' by determination of cancer fighter after latest surgery | PerthNow

The Perth family of brave cancer fighter Amelia “Milli” Lucas say they are “blown away by her determination and will” following her most recent round of brain surgery by high-profile Sydney surgeon Dr Charlie Teo.

The 13-year-old with the dazzling smile has captured the hearts of West Australians in her battle against terminal brain cancer. Milli was put into palliative care in April last year and given only weeks to live after more than two years of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cyber treatment and surgery at Perth Children’s Hospital failed to beat the fast-growing tumour.

She has managed to defy the odds time and time again, so much so she has been dubbed Perth’s “miracle girl”.

I have had the privilege of being involved with Perth Children’s Hospital ever since I arrived in Australia many years ago. The lessons I learnt from these desperately sick children will stay with me for the rest of my life. Their courage, resilience, hope and ability to smile through their tears, put many an adult decades older than themselves to shame.

Great story, the courage of kids never cease to amaze me, and a great doctor. Had the pleasure of meeting Charlie Teo at a Uni lecture a couple of years ago. A really fun guy.

In the eyes of many, Charlie Teo is a medical genius, yet he has not been invited to operate in any public hospitals …jealousy by our surgeons, it’s sickening. Milli was only able to have her operation as a result of crowd funding to get her over to Sydney for surgery.

A petition to allow him to perform high-risk procedures in public hospitals across Australia attracted almost 30,000 signatures in 24 hours.

A new study finds that people who feel enthusiastic and cheerful -- what psychologists call 'positive affect' -- are less likely to experience memory decline as they age.

This result adds to a growing body of research on positive affect's role in healthy aging.

Covid Vaccine: U.K. Clears Pfizer Covid Shot for First Vaccinations Next Week

Hundreds have already received it.

ZURICH: Switzerland will start getting doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and partner BioNTech within days after its drugs regulator authorised use of the jabs in what officials called the world's first approval under a standard procedure.

Two months after receiving the application, Swissmedic allowed the vaccine for people aged 16 and older after a rolling review of documents being submitted.

That cleared the way for an initial delivery of just over 100,000 doses, which the army will put into deep-freeze storage and send to cantons to start inoculations of vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with medical conditions.

A nationwide campaign to vaccinate risk groups can start from Jan. 4. Subsequent deliveries of 250,000 doses a month held out hope that all who wanted a free jab could get one by mid-2021, federal public health agency officials said.

With approval of another product expected soon, Switzerland would have enough vaccine in the months ahead, agency director Anne Levy told a news conference in Bern.

Swissmedic is also reviewing applications for vaccines made by Moderna and AztraZeneca.

COVID-19 cases in Switzerland and neighbouring Liechtenstein have surpassed 400,000 and the death toll has topped 6,000, prompting the government on Friday to close restaurants for a month and urge people to stay home.

Although the timing of Swissmedic's approval took even government officials by surprise, the agency said data showed the vaccine was safe and effective.

"The safety of patients is an essential prerequisite, especially where the authorisation of vaccines is concerned," Swissmedic Director Raimund Bruhin said.

Sabine Bruckner, Pfizer's head of Swiss operations, called Swiss approval "a historic moment in the fight against this deadly disease".

The vaccine has been authorised or approved for emergency use in more than 15 countries, the partners said. Bruhin said he expected European Union approval soon.

Pfizer has to keep submitting information on the safety, efficacy and quality of its vaccine, Swissmedic said.

"We will take immediate action if necessary should safety signals emerge," Bruhin told a news conference.

Switzerland has a contract with Pfizer and BioNTech to deliver 3 million doses of the vaccine, enough for 1.5 million people to get two jabs three weeks apart.

Wonderful news...my brother will be among the first to get it!
