What WHO says about over 60s and face masks

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has changed its stance on the wearing of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

People over 60 and those with underlying medical conditions should wear a medical-grade mask when they’re in public and are unable to socially distance, WHO says, adding that they should wear a three-layer fabric mask in those situations.

WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the advice was based on new research.

“In areas with community transmission, we advise that people aged 60 years or over, or those with underlying conditions, should wear a medical mask in situations where physical distancing is not possible," Mr Tedros said.

“WHO [also] advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments."

The WHO guidance says people can make their own three-layer masks by using an inner layer of an absorbent material, such as cotton or cotton blends, a middle layer made of a non-woven material polypropylene or cotton to enhance filtration of droplets, and an outer layer of a non-absorbent material such polypropylene, polyester, or their blends. Stretchy, porous materials should be avoided.

WHO says masks should be worn only by one person and should be changed if soiled or wet. They should be washed at high temperatures or, if hot water is not available, boiled for one minute.

WHO adds however, that the use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide an adequate level of protection and should be combined with other personal and community measures.

Best to buy them and must not be touched on the inside of mask with your hands before applying.

Hold by its elastics and bin it after use.

Do not re apply after removing.

Wash hands after removing it and do not wear it for more than 4 hours at a time.

Ensure mask has a close fit to face covering all of mouth and nose with pinching the top wire edge on top of nose bridge for a snug fit.

would be better for everyone if did as they were told, ISOLATE, ISOLATE, ISOLATE.  much better than exterminate!

Despite the warnings and wearings evident in numerous images and stories from overseas ...

masks just don't seem to be cheaply and widely available in Australia.

Am I missing something?

Haven't seen them for sale anywhere locally.

I was given a cloth one for Mother's Day - a sign of the times type of thing.

But have seen some paper sort of masks at Chemist Warehouse I think...

Most chemists sell them.  Cincotta Chemist has 10 for $12.00.   My doctor advised me on this from the word go as I have emphysema.

Is anyone really taking this latest offering from CHINA via the WHO seriously?

Listen to the Australian health officials who are not recommending masks for all in all circumstances.

Yes KSS, I take this advice very seriously. However I suggest you do not take Mr Trumps diatribes against the WHO seriously, Mr Trump is always finding someone else to blame for his own inadequacies or incompetence, the WHO was an easy target.

The WHO is a UN organisation and as such is bound to accept information given by a member state at face value. The WHO does not, nor does it have a mandate or the capacity to do so, investigate what happens inside the borders of a sovreign nation like China or USA or Russia or Australia or anywhere else. The WHO is not a police force, it is an organisation of medical professionals who are charged with monitoring the health of the world and helping less well resourced nations respond effectively to health issues.

What a short memory you have Eddy. There you are grimly hanging on to your masks and supporting the WHO who criticised Australia for closing our borders when we did. Had we not done so and believed the WHO when they said there was no pandemic and that China was a model of perfection in their dealing with what was then known as the Wuhan virus, Australia would be in a far worse position than we currently are in every way. BTW we now call the virus COVID-19 because the WHO wanted to help China save ffave. In all other pandemics, the virus has been named after the place it originated, the Spanish flu for example, MARS = Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome. But we are not allowed to call the current pandemic Wuhan virus because the Chinese got upset! So WHO came up with COVID-19. And you say they are not influenced by specific countries. Think again.

China objected to a fully independent investigation and only capitulated when 180 countries accepted the WHO to investigate. The samr WHO that backed and continues to back China. Wonder just how impartial they will be.

Not quite correct. Spanish Flu did not originate in Spain.

COVID-19 was not so named to help the Chinese save face. It is a strain of Coronavirus. Only Donald Trump called it Wuhan virus, or Chinese virus in his usual inimitable racist style.
