Which dark chocolate wins the taste test?

A new CHOICE review of 37 dark chocolates has found that Lindt Excellence 90% Cocoa is the best of the best when it comes to taste and nutrition.

“Our experts conducted a blind taste test of 37 dark chocolate blocks that you can find in the aisles of major supermarket chains,” says CHOICE’s Rachel Clemons.

“The chocolates were judged on flavour, texture, aroma, and appearance. The nutritional value of the chocolate was also included in the overall score,” says Ms Clemons.

“Our experts commended the Lindt Excellence 90% Cocoa chocolate, which scored first place for its pleasant taste, shiny appearance and smooth texture,” says Ms Clemons.

I always have a jar of Lindt 70 - 78% Dark Chocolate in the fridge. I cut the squares into quarters as I don't want it to be devoured too quickly. It's the best of all chocolates.

I freely admit I am a chocoholic and I especially like dark chocolate.

Having said that, I have always found that anything over about 70% just tastes bitter to me and of course we don't eat chocolate to end up with a bitter taste in our mouths.

70% and under is just lovely.

Agree with the 70% and under, above is too bitter. Currently started a block of Dairy Fine Aldi brand

from Belgium and for the price it is quite acceptable. Hey Cadbury Rum 'n' Raisin suits me too, and there is no Halal sign on that!

My favourite is Cadbury Rum & Raisin daek chocolate.

Me Too! I also Like Lindt Dark 70%

No thank you folks, keep your dark chocolate ...my weakness is Belgian milk chocs!

I’m with you, Miss B, give me milk chocolate every time.

My choice - Lindt 95%

Never have to share and no one takes it from you.

All other chocolate tastes too sweet after this but Lindt chlli chocolate comes a close second.

What about Lindt  bitter orange peel or Mint? Both are dark as well.

Haven'y yet tried Lindt  bitter orange peel. Perhaps I should give it a go. I tried 100% cacao chocolate once just to see what it was like. Tasted like dirt.

Lindt Dark with mint ... yummy!

My favourite is Cadbury with Roast Almonds

...eat a square every day and buy it when on special.

Cadbury Old Gold Roast Almond

Eat a square a day?  How on earth do you do that?

You must have tremendous willpower.  I usually eat enough so that I end up with a chocolate headache/hangover.

I say everything in moderation .. I take it for health benefit

I don't know what they are called but I have been addicted to little balls of chocolate covered fruit candy made by Lindt, cost $4 a packet.  Just recently discovered that Black and Green are putting out the same product for $2 a packet and far superior. More chocolate, more fruit centre.

I'm glad to hear that my addiction has won the day! I like the 85% Lindt as well, for a bit of variation.

I love the new organic greena nd black 85%, its ingredients are ethically sourced and they dont use palm oil and other nasty ingredients like the top one thats mentioned.

I'm not a fan of Lindt ... always tastes oily to me.
It's Darrell Lea for me.

100% palm oil free

Harry Lea moved from England to Australia and started life with his family in Perth. His parents paid for him to learn to make confectionery but it wasn't until almost two decades later that he started using these skills. In 1927, 'Darrell Lea' was created. Harry opened a shop in Sydney Haymarkets to sell his delicious confectionery, naming the shop Darrell Lea after his youngest son.
