Woman arrested over needles found in strawberries in Queensland

A 50-year-old woman has been arrested by Queensland Police following a "complex investigation" into the alleged contamination of strawberries in September.

After the discovery of punnets of strawberries contaminated with needles, Queensland authorities notified the public of the safety risk on September 12.

The QPS co-ordinated a national investigative response with multiplegovernment, law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

A police taskforce was established with officers from the State Crime Command co-ordinating the investigation together with detectives in a number of police districts in Queensland.

That whole episode was very strange with all the copy cat behaviour. What is wrong with humans? We are a strange bunch! Are we the weirdest species on earth?

Very strange indeed. Who knows what twisted thoughts go through a person's head...maybe revenge for a perceived wrong....

Yes, Robi humans are the cruelest and most selfish creatures on earth --

Somehow I suspected it would be a woman

Me too. Most men would not know sewing needles exist.

I didnt think of that

 .........   lololololol    :-)

Let's now see how the new law is applied to the situation.  Hopefully this will set a precident that will see an end to this type of behaviour.  You can have all the laws you like, but if they are not applied, they are worse than useless.

I am guessing that it will be tear-jerking excuses for the criminal acts - all Australia's/society's fault and a smack on the wrist.

But the alleged offender did the acts with premeditation and malice aforethought and didn't care who might suffer or die.

Stiff penalties are for those hated old white men, who first have to demonstrate why they exist and haven't taken the green drink yet.

A more detailed report [click for ABC link]

50 yr old My Ut Trinh is charged with seven counts of contamination.

The poor old strawberry farmers took a terrible blow to their livlihood .

I wonder how long it will take for them to fully recover their industry.

The farmers, workers and shops will never recover the money lost.

Australia is losing its valuable reputation as a safe food source (which allows us to charge a premium for products) and as safe destination for tourism.

A good reputation is developed through the hard work of may over years, but is easily chipped away by events such as this.

Hopefully things will recover quickly as per link below. So sorry for those who suffered from this weird act of food terrorism.

I hope that 'weird' is not being used in the way a defence barrister might employ it to diminish the alleged offender's volition.  -So common in cases of terrorism here and abroad.

There have been vengeful, malicious acts before and extortion (eg medicine tampering in Australia).  Why are foods and especially medications now in 'tamper proof' (more tamper evident) packaging?  That cost millions to introduce and the costs to the consumer continue.

The penalties and hopefully perceived certainty of detection and conviction must be real to have any hope of deterring copycats.

I hope not too LJ. The only reason I used the word weird was that the phenomenon seemed to spread so quickly/widely and reportedly some instances were the work of copycats.

It's the copycat syndrome that was weird to me as well as the original motivations. Why, just why ... as a perpetrator ... punish everyone because you're not feeling feeling good??

So damaging and so nasty. Whoever they catch should bear the full brunt of the new laws IMO.

And the copycats are still out there with a needle in an apple just this weekend (shopped online from Woolies in Perth I think.)

Hope the authorities catch up with them as well. As I said very damaging weirdos ... who should bear the full brunt of the law if caught IMO.

Apparently the offender is a refugee who spent several years in Australia being helped by the Australian government to stay here.

When proven guilty of any criminal act, a refugee should be immediately deported to their nation of origin or to wherever they came from, let them do their damage there.

This person could have caused more than economical disaster for many, she could have killed and maimed a few people, so for goodness sake get rid of her.

To keep such a criminal mind in a jail and keep mantaining her life in Australia is a gross mistake and Australia does not need people of her caliber, let alone protect them and give them legal rights.

But I am sure the proccess of her judgement will be long and costly to the Australian public, as it has been for the strawberry farmers she ruined and at the end they will let her stay in our country and keep her from harm, the idiots!

She is a Vietnamese-Australian immigrant who has been here 20 years and obtained Australian citizenship. I think she can only be deported if she holds dual citizenship, that is, if she has retained her Vietnamese citizenship, and only then after she has completed her jail sentence here. I agree with you that she should be deported because she has committed a crime against the Australian people.

What about an immigrant who came 150 years ago

shoukd they have been sent back too if they had committed a similar crime ?

What about the children of those immigrants ?

If we give you some Allen's lollies, wil you shut up????

Think this awful woman should be put in a cell and fed strawberries at every meal.

Great idea KIAH!! But strawerries with a few needles inside!

I wonder if she is being scapegoated, or did she admit to it? They found her DNA in the strawberries but then she works there, I am confused. If she did do it why? What happened to her to make her so mean? A dreadful thing to happen, and I hope everyone continues to wash and cut their fruit before eating. I never stopped eating strawberries, I only eat organic ones and cut them in half anyway.

Yes please all! Cut your fruit before you bite into it. I heard of other fruit being spoiled with needles and nails in other parts of Australia.

The stupidity and cruelty as well as the lack of human feeling and concern for others is being exposed these days by all kinds of people and instead of being concerned and minding our own business, we seem to be malignant towards others that did nothing to us.

Be careful everyone and examine your food items before you eat them, these days nothing is safe.

And try to be good and kind to others in this jolly season and always!
