World's most liveable cities revealed

Australia has three cities in the world’s top 10 most liveable cities, according to  the Economist Intelligence Unit’s global index.

Melbourne is second again – behind Vienna – but the movers are Sydney and Adelaide.

Sydney has moved from fifth to third and Adelaide has jumped into the top 10.

Just 0.7 points separate Vienna (99.1) and Melbourne (98.4) and Sydney scored 98.1. Perth was 14th place and Brisbane 18th.

“Sydney has risen from fifth to third, thanks to an improvement in its culture and environment score, reflecting an increased focus on combating and mitigating the impacts of climate change, as outlined by the city’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy,” the Economist said. “However, Sydney remains behind its great rival, Melbourne.

“With both cities already scoring very highly across all categories, there is only limited potential for Sydney to displace either Melbourne or Vienna at the top of the rankings.”

Dr Lucy Gunn, a research fellow in the Centre for Urban Research at Melbourne’s RMIT university, said it was important to remember that the index was a composite rating made up 30 indicators, with only four of them being quantitative.

“The rest of them are based on a rating from the [Economist Intelligence Unit] itself, so there’s almost no objectivity in the development of this index, and it’s really just a marketing tool to help executives understand, in a broad sense, a city’s living conditions.”

Paris dropped six places to 25 due to the anti-government ‘yellow vest’ protests and Hong Kong dropped three places to 38 after months of recent political unrest.

I don't know what criteria they use to make these choices, but I wouldn't class Sydney or Melbourne as "livable" cities. Personally there are nearly NO cities I would class as "livable" anywhere.

Says who Janelle.  Its a bit like a kid show.  Mothers will always say their own are 'beautiful' even if nobody agrees with them.  So it is with cities.

I agree with you on this one pedro.  Cities are what they are and whilst some of us have to live in a thriving metropolis others prefer a real lifestyle. fresh air and scenic beauty.  Give me the later any old day.

Also wondering how they measure the criteria for a livable city. Always thought a livable city is one that is safe and secure, has affordable  housing and a variety of transportation options. None of the cities mentioned although beautiful in their individual way, do not fit all the criteria. I certainly won't be retiring in a city.

Don't like cities and regard small regional towns as preferable in which to live. How Melbourne is in 2nd place (formerly 1st place) is beyond me. Graffiti everywhere - the approach from the Bendigo/Castlemaine railway line, when coming into Melbourne, is like looking at a rubbish tip with extensive graffiti on old warehouses, along railway line embankments, suburban back fences, etc.

Too crowded in city, too much traffic congestion while many homeless sleep in the streets. Not to mention the ever increasing high rise buildings (can we think of a more extreme design next time we build one? seems to be the criteria these days) which lead to less solar penetration and creation of wind tunnels. Plus Federation Square which looks like it is covered with solidified camouflage material - more trees  and open spaces please instead. Then we have the increasing crime problem as well - does this all contribute to a liveable city? Don't think so.

correct on all points. Annoyingly Mr Magoo AKA the Victorian premier, when asked always replies "there are no gangs or crime in Melbourne". Well ha ha ha and another haha.

Very biased view, where is Singapore?  That's a city I would choose ahead of any big city in Australia and Europe, maybe with the exception of Lisbon in Portugal.

This compaison of cities is put together, as I understand it, to provide a guide to businesses who are transferring workers there. It is not a guide to how liveable it is for those who are native to that city.

Personnally I like Melbourne but it is changing in a way I don't like. Singapore is nice but it is a Police State with some rigid controls. Sydney is nice to visit but it has a lousy climate, in my opinion as I don't like humidity. I think Vienna is a good choice to the limit of my experience there. In general small cities beat the big ones hands down in my book.

I would love to live in a place called Funchal(Madeira)a small island in the Alantic ocean, its a safe clean & friendly & healthy city. Some of these experts should get around more!!

Funchal still looks a little crowded to me. Not a city fan

:) Apparently, this little gem is up for sale on Norfolk Island for those seeking a secluded paradise, a little closer to home LOL.

Source.

Are they trying to attract more people to move to Melbourne and Sydney, ask the people who drive on the roads every day and they will tell you it is not that liveable.

That research is seriously skewed. Perth is by far the best city to live in jeepers, we've even got hoops coming out of the ground!
