Careful with your camera in Paris

The Eiffel Tower is undoubtedly one of the world’s most recognisable and photographed landmarks. But did you know it’s illegal to snap a picture of the tall tower at night?

Yep. If you’ve seen a photograph of the Eiffel Tower in its illuminated finery then chances are that pic is illegal.

According to the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel: “The views from the Eiffel Tower are rights-free. Permission and rights must be obtained from the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel for the publication of photographs of the illuminated Eiffel Tower.”

Of course, the tower, during the daytime, is public domain, which means you can snap away like a croc chewing chickens. But at night, those lights are the property of the artist and, essentially, copyrighted to the artist.

However, while it’s technically illegal to photograph the lightshow, no one has been charged for doing so.

Still, after dark, it might be a good idea to pocket your camera if the gendarmes are around.

Have you ever taken a photo of the Eiffel Tower at night?
