Touring Australia: which destinations are hot?

Choosing the best way to tour Australia is the key to making the most of your trip. So, where do you start? We asked seasoned traveller Wendy Harch for her advice.

Which will be the hottest spots for local tours in 2017?
Tasmania, the Kimberley and New Zealand are three destinations we are seeing huge demand for this year.

When is the best time to grab a deal?
Due to the sheer size of Australia, it is little surprise that every destination has a slightly different peak season because of the diverse climates. People tend to head south in summer and north in winter. If you want to travel in peak season, we recommend you book well in advance as dates tend to sell out quickly – getting in early also means you can enjoy Early Payment discounts. If you are flexible, you might be able to hold off until closer to the travel date and ask for Last Minute discounts or hot deals. You never know if you don’t ask!

Five reasons why you should go ‘coach’
Should you go with an escorted tour or independent trip? There are plenty of reasons to choose a coach tour but these are my top five:

  • everything is organised for you in advance so you can just relax and let your hair down
  • educational commentary elaborates on sights and sounds along the way, and creates a real sense of storytelling and community
  • no need to worry about carrying heavy bags, as your luggage is transferred to you door to door, from start to finish
  • you are free of the stress and arguments that can come from navigating and driving
  • plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded people and make friends!

How can you tell which tour will best suit your personality?
It’s easy – just research the itinerary on aatkings.com and find a holiday that has the destinations and experiences that excite you.

Do you offer any special support/features for solo travellers?
The AAT Kings Guided Holidays tours offer competitive single supplement rates, if you prefer to confirm your own room, or we can match you with a guest of the same gender at no extra cost.

I would hate coach tours -- unless it was maybe just a day tour while on holiday -- IN MY OWN CAR-- would hate to be stuck with others for weeks on end and not be able to stay OR leave various places if I loved or disliked them -- sometimes a tour guide can be of benefit to find out facts about a place -- but no more than a day for me
