Now this may sound like a contradiction of terms. Since when have Nice and Monte Carlo been anything but super expensive playgrounds for the rich and famous?
Well, as we land and check out the super luxurious yachts (some say $35-50 million US dollars worth), it’s hard to imagine how we are going to find an affordable adventure. But then we discover the local bus. For one euro each, we purchase a one-way fare from the centre of Monacoto the centre of Nice, along one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Europe. Those who have driven the Grand Corniche, built during the reign of Napoleon, will recall the amazing twists and turns through tiny villages with pastel stucco villas, giant palms and an azure sea glittering below, dotted with the occasional yacht or fishing boat.
Nice surprises us with many affordable cafes offering low-cost snacks and great coffee, as well as the fun of strolling the daily market. And then for the princely sum of another euro each, we get to enjoy the same stunning scenery, in reverse, as the sun is sinking over Monte Carlo. As the credit card advert says, simply priceless.
