Solo cruising may be soaring in popularity, but so too is the cost of sailing alone.

According to Derek Banks, managing director of European Waterways, the company has seen a 50 per cent increase in solo travellers over the past two years.

“Our floating boutique hotels hold just six to 12 guests, making them ideal for single travellers,” said Mr Banks.

“The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with all excursions and special events done as a group. All our guests dine together, swapping stories and making new friends as they enjoy the regional cuisine and fine wines served by an attentive crew.”

European Waterways is celebrating the record bookings by waiving the single supplement fee on more than 40 departures in 2019.

Cruise through the Burgundy and the Canal du Midi regions in France or voyage through Venice and the Po Valley in Italy. Hit the waters of the rugged Highlands of Scotland or take a tulip cruise in Holland.

Up to 40 cruises with no single supplement fee are available from April through July 2019, with savings of up to $3520. The special offer cannot be combined with other offers and additional restrictions may apply.

In France, eligible cruises include La Belle Époque and L’Impressionniste in Burgundy; Enchanté on the Canal du Midi; Rosa in Gascony; and Panache in Champagne and Alsace & Lorraine. Panache also offers a special cruise in Holland. Other cruises offering single supplement waivers include La Bella Vita in Venice and the Po Valley. European Waterways’ largest vessel, La Bella Vita offers ample cabin options with a capacity of up to 20 passengers. On the Caledonian Canal at the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the Spirit of Scotland is also waiving the single supplement on select departures.
