Seven cruises for wildlife watchers

Are you looking for a cruise that’s a little out of the ordinary? Then these seven unusual wildlife cruise destinations may provide you with the inspiration to get back to nature.

Amazon

The Amazon is not only one of the most famous rivers in the world, but it’s also home to some of the world’s most diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for pink dolphins and colourful birdlife in the tree canopy, such as macaws and parrots. You may also catch a glimpse of squirrel monkeys as well as many other stars of the primate world.

Alaska

The waters around America’s 49th state are home to whales, seals and sea otters, whilst, on the land, you’ll have the chance to spot grizzly bears, golden eagles, Arctic ground squirrels, caribou, moose, beavers, lynx and wolverines, and much more. Top wildlife and sea life spotting areas include Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau.

Arctic

The Arctic Circle is only accessible in the summer, and once the snow melts, you’ll have the chance to see polar bears in their native habitat. You’ll also catch a glimpse of an assortment of sea life, such as whales and walrus, along with a rich variety of birds, both native and migratory. Thousands of birds migrate to the cliffs of Svalbard each year to return to their feeding and breeding grounds. Some cruises also offer passengers the opportunity to go ashore to see much more.

Borneo

Take a boat through Borneo and visit Camp Leakey to hang with orang-utans in rehabilitation centres for ex-captive primates. Explore the river system and interact with proboscis monkeys and other primates that roam freely throughout the forest. You’ll also be exposed to over 220 bird species, as well as numerous plant varieties and ecosystems, which are home to silvery lutung monkeys and macaques.

Greenland

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous and looking for something out of the ordinary, then why not head off on a sailing trip from Greenland through the Northwest Passage to the Russian Arctic? On your journey you can expect to see several different types of whales in the water, and on land, brown and polar bears, Arctic wolves, caribou and moose. Look up and you’ll find more than 50 different species of birds, including kittiwakes, rare white-tailed eagles and rough-legged hawks.

Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the rarest animals on the planet. Here you can swim with high-spirited sea lions, wander alongside giant tortoises and spy several different species of birds, including flamingos, cormorants, penguins and boobies. There is also much marine life situated in and around the archipelago, including whales, dolphins and other rare water-dwelling creatures. The Galapagos are on many bucket lists – why not add it to yours?

Africa

If you feel like visiting a warmer location, then a cruise along southern Africa’s Chobe River may be more suitable for you. Here you can see elephants, lions and buffalos on early-morning safaris. Then spend the day relaxing on board as you float through Botswana’s Chobe National Park – famous for its dense and diverse wildlife population.
