Top six picks for a winter’s weekend at Lake Mac

Reality TV star and actor Tim Robards, born and raised in Lake Macquarie, recently popped back for a jam-packed weekend to rediscover his old stomping ground, support the local tourism industry, and hang out with his darling mum.

Here are Tim’s top picks for a fun-filled getaway at Lake Macquarie, affectionately known as Lake Mac, just 90 minutes from central Sydney.

Explore the beautiful Bombala Walking Track that weaves through the bush in Glenrock State Conservation Area. You’ll catch glimpses of the Pacific Ocean before descending to the secluded Dudley Beach. The walk is a great way to get your heart pumping out in the open air, and you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing swim at the end.

Whales migrate through the waters in winter and spring, so keep your eyes peeled at the viewing platforms along the way. There’s also a hang-gliding pad, and if you’re lucky you can watch thrill-seekers launch themselves over the ocean for an exhilarating ride. Refuel at The Yoga Place Cafe, serving all-day breakfast and lunch.

Check out the stunning coastline by boat with CoastXP (CoastXP’s tour guide Dom will give you all the inside info) – Tim says he came across top spots he never knew were on his doorstep.

Lake Mac Watersports can organise everything from jetboat tours to water-skiing, kayak hire or stand-up paddleboards – Pip, the owner, has everything you need. Tim did an easy paddle around the lake but recommends the ocean jetboat ride as a unique way to get inside the caves at Caves Beach, and to get the adrenaline pumping.

Spend a romantic and relaxing afternoon indulging in a special waterfront picnic organised by the experts at Luxe Lakeside Picnics. With four picnic themes to choose from, you’re certain to find something that fits your occasion and taste.

La Bohème is an ultra-luxe blend of whimsy and fanciful decor inspired by the colours of the desert sunset. This bohemian-chic picnic is embellished with lush velvets and brightly coloured cushions, flora and fauna prints and low-lying tables adorned with dried wildflowers.

The Amalfi Azure option allows you to escape to the Mediterranean with an array of azure blues, rustic timber tables, fresh lemons, and beautiful Italian ceramic tableware.

Choose to go fun and playful with Candyland Chic or opt for sophistication with the House of Hamptons theme.

Tim’s recommendation is to eat dinner at 8 at Trinity, a modern contemporary Italian waterfront restaurant and cafe that caters to locals and day-trippers. The produce, the presentation and the shared desserts are all spectacular.
