Australia’s most remote hotel

A scenic sanctuary set between the rugged Kimberly coastline and the mouth of the River Berkeley, Berkeley River Lodge in Kununurra is one the world’s most spectacular and remote hotels.

Accessible only by light aircraft and with its own dedicated airstrip, this remote hotel is more than 150km from the nearest town. There’s no address allocated for Berkeley River Lodge, and the nearest road – an unsealed four-wheel-drive track with private access only – is about 60km from the lodge itself.

Guests of this remote resort are allocated one of 20 luxury, private villas, perched on a 65-metre high dune, each with its own 180-degree panoramic view of the ocean or river. Onsite, there’s a five-star restaurant and a huge swimming pool.

Day time activities on offer include a guided four-wheel-drive tour of the area’s rich eco-system, where you can discover mangroves and catch glimpses of saltwater crocodiles, sea turtles and sharks. Or, like a Middle Eastern prince and his wife, who stopped by on their way

home from a tour of Australia’s east coast, you could take a helicopter ride over King George and Mitchell Falls, and some ancient indigenous sites, decorated with rock art.

So how much does a stay at this luxury resort cost you? A standard 40-square metre room for two, outfitted with a private balcony, timber flooring and open-air bathroom with a view of the Timor Sea and Berkeley River, will set you back a cool $1650per night.

For those with extremely deep pockets, who are more interested in investment opportunities than holidaymaking, you’re in luck. Berkeley River Lodge is currently for sale. After four years, owners Martin and Kim Peirson-Jones are looking to sell to someone who will help unlock the full potential of the 4000-hectare property.

Would you love the chance to stay at this resort?
