This is a must visit if down that way in France. The advice is correct, it is wall to wall with people in Summer so a cooler period is a good time to visit. But looking at the map …. Don’t expect to get anywhere near the fortress in 10 mins if walking. Drive! In fact, find a cute Small French village and stay there. There are plenty of places to visit but you need a car and a Sat Nav! Google Cathar Castles … Frankly they are not Cathar Castles but that is another story. Do your research before you arrive as information over there on places of interest is poor to say the least. And don’t forget, France is closed most of the time so check out opening hours before you go to a place of interest …. And even thou the sign may say ‘open’ don’t be too disappointed if the place is closed!!!!

A wonderful place to visit but in that south/west part of France known as Catalunya, there are many unusual and interesting places. Perpignan is a large city just 2 hours from Carcassonne, driving out from there are many vineyards as it’s a huge wine making area. Again, just 2 hours from Perpignan are several Cathar castle ruins plus the extraordinary Forte de Salse. As a female not remotely interested in wars or fighting, I was reluctant to go to a place that didn’t interest me one bit. How wrong I was, history does interest me and this place is quite remarkable!
Also 2 hours from Perpignan is the home of the Airbus, the factory offers tours for those interested.
Just 2 hours again from Perpignan and you’re in Barcelona, Spain.
It’s a wonderful part of France to base your self.
